How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsENIGMA DVD from Miramax
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2021
Not sure why I haven't written a review of this film before. I have viewed the DVD now 3 times since 2013, and I still find it hard going, but worth while. It does require concentration as the plot is pretty complicated ( and a bit hard to swallow in places), but the acting/casting is great and fun, except perhaps for Dougray Scott, who really looks as if he was on another planet. I must have enjoyed it to see it 3 times!! The DVD is excellent quality, with good picture, sound and subtitles. I won't describe the plot except to say the Bletcley Park sequences are really gripping, and the whole film, while it may indeed play fast and loose with the facts, is still a fascinating watch. Recomended

1.0 out of 5 starsAlan Turing is erased from history and replaced
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2021
This film is a tragedy and utterly disgusting. It erases Alan Turing, who we know was the mind behind breaking the Enigma code. Here's he's replaced by a heterosexual character, which is just whitewashing a heroic, brilliant mind and man from the history - because it was too troublesome to the writer or director to include the horrific story of Turing's homosexuality and the way he was coerced into chemical castration and later killed himself? This is just horrific. It should be taken down from Amazon immediately.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful.

This movie should either be removed from Amazon or a note added to explain that the enigma machine was developed thanks to the genius of Alan Turing, not the wet character in this film.
In addition, the storyline is clunky and much of the acting frankly amateurish.

I was expecting from the title and review to watch a spy/ war movie. What I got was a murder mystery underpinned by world war 2 and the work at Bechly Park.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really,really awful !

I have to say I found this film neither dramatic, thrilling or suspensful in any of its 114 minutes. In fact I found it very slow, dreary and ponderous.I haven't read the book and don't judge how a film transfers from book to screen because invariably bits have to be left out OR rae left out and the Director is in a no-win situation. However I found the acting of Dougray Scott and Kate Winslett to be very "wooden".Saffron Burrows was in my opinion totally mis-cast in her role except when she had to act as a floosie which suited her perfectly.Jeremy Northam gave the film a bit of a bite but even he couldn't save it? The whole thing was in my opinion, which is what reviews are, opinions,a terrible flop!Perhaps I was spoilt when I saw the great Derek Jacobi star as Alan Turing in the 1996 TV Movie "Breaking The Code".THIS was unfortunately as far as I know never made as a DVD BUT would have got 5 stars if it had been.I think most people who saw it would remember it? I think the part of Dougray Scotts - Tom Jericho MAY be loosely based on Turing?

1.0 out of 5 stars UK BLURAY??
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2021
Why do these films always get rereleased on DVD but never Blu Ray?
Germany, and other European countries, always seem to get Blu Ray as standard, but the UK it’s always a crappy DVD “if we are lucky”!

20 Years after the films’ release now would be a good time!!

Mr. Leszek S. Werenowski
1.0 out of 5 stars Do something better with your life
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 July 2009
Imagine a film made in Hollywood about the second world war concerning a secret device called radar. Unfortunately this secret is about to be betrayed because of the actions of a duplicious English spy. I think that if something like this were attempted there would be outrage, and rightly so. This film deals with the Enigma machine devised by the Germans prior to WW2 as an unbreakable code machine to be used in wartime. It is however compromised and a large part of the initial work was done in Poland by Polish mathematicians. When Poland was invaded the vital and significant breakthroughs made were unconditionally shared with the allies shortening the war by an estimated 2 years. Because of secrecy surrounding the Enigma machine decades elasped before anything at all was said about it and even then few people understand the massive contribution made by cracking the Enigma code. A Hollywood film on the subject would have been a supreme opportunity to deal with a very deserving subject and simply telling the truth would in itself have been more than enough to have made a fantastic film. Instead the film portrays a Pole as a spy. The sheer injustice of such a storyline casts a very long shadow over what is in any event a very mediocre film. There are films out there based upon the events of WW2 that are worth seeing, Katyn being a recent example if you are interested in a Polish theme. Enigma is a wasted opportunity.
