How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Mads at his smouldering best. The story is really intriguing and holds the film together. It could have been a disaster with such limited dialogue. The acting is good too, if you are looking for a blockbuster with all the normal accompaniments look elsewhere. This has some good historical relevance, particularly to those whose still venerate Columbus as the founding father!

2.0 out of 5 starsSlow, atmospheric, bleak and boring.

I didn't much care for this film, and was shrugging my shoulders by the end of it. It is low budget, the main character does not talk, which makes the film feel quite alienating, along with the setting in a windswept rocky places and foggy weather. (filmed in a remote part of Scotland).

It is brutal, like we imagine life was in earlier times. It has some interesting symbology, but I can't tell you what it was about really, other than showing you the brutal and crazy side of humanity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oppressive atmosphere

A movie with an ongoing tension. You never know what is going to happen. The stilled images, close ups of grim, bearded faces and the beautiful, but dim nature of Scotland all take care of an atmospheric (and sometimes violent) film. Though all in all a slow movie, with not much deepening and a simpel plot (a journey with obstacles), it nevertheless keeps you glued to the screen!

Beware, this film moves at a slow pace. If your little brain gets hurt by that kinda thing then avoid. Its also not the movie you might think it is by looking at the cover. Arthouse medieval barbaric fun..

A really interesting film although I think it's marketing was a bit off. The trailer and front cover seem to appeal to the teenager blood and guts crowd while the film itself offers so much more. Imagine David Lynch directing the more trippy scenes and Peter Jackson back in his Braindead days directing the gore with Herzog on camera. The film offers a very bleak view on a more savage time in mans history. Defiantly one to watch if you appreciate well crafted films verging on arthouse. One to miss if your after epic battles, blood soaked heroes and a happy ending. Very interesting cinema though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a DVD by its cover

If you can appreciate symbolism and metaphor in your films then you may enjoy Valhalla Rising. This isn't your typical Hollywood action romp. If the cover has deceived you into thinking this is some Rambo-esque Viking action film you'll be disappointed, which I suspect is the reason why this film has received so many negative reviews. It requires you to think a little bit about what you're seeing in order to work out what exactly is going on.

On my first viewing I was impressed with the aesthetics of it, but confused as to what it all meant. But that's fine, not every film has to wrap everything up in an easily digested parcel. When a director leaves you guessing it can be maddening, but I like it when a film is open to interpretation. I recommend that you watch this film and decide for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A definite hi-def purchase

Nicolas Winding Refn's Viking crusader drama (literally) bleeds with intensity and storm-cloud philosophy. Mads Mikkelsen's mute warrior, One Eye, stalks the scarred Scandinavian bluffs, violently escaping violent captivity, before setting off with a band of savage Christian Crusaders on a voyage to the Promised Land, only to wind up in Vinland. Such expeditions are known to have taken place, although Valhalla Rising isn't so much about recounting precise history as depicting the monster at the heart of the male soul.

The film fairly reeks of mud and blood; the violence is sudden and frightening yet indifferent; and every stone-hewn character is driven by an insatiable hunger, be it wrath, profit, or the Will of God. This is not a fast-paced hack-`em-up, but a patient study of a species' primal curse, embodied by One Eye: pure power and pure guilt; the ghost of mankind's future, haunting The Boy (Maarten Stevenson) as he seeks his path home. Tellingly, Winding Refn takes us to the edge of the world, and still doesn't tell us where "home" is.

I brought this because I liked drive , so I took a risk , this movie is awesome , a juxtaposition of beautiful peaceful landscapes and intense graphic violence, a voyage of doom never looked so good
