The Upgrade I Never Knew I Needed

I'd had my previous Paperwhite for 7 or 8 years before deciding to upgrade to this latest model.

It's an e-reader so, I assumed it would be pretty similar to my previous Kindle. However, this is definitely a worthwhile upgrade. I've no experience of prior iterations, but this has provided me with an enormous leap in enjoyment.

That extra 0.8" screen just makes the pages feel a lot closer to books (my picture shows a larger font for reading at night without glasses - you can get loads more text on the page). The refresh rate is crisp and fast, truly delightful. I had no real problem with the lights on the previous model, but the 13 additional lights and warm light make everything so clear. The auto-adjusting light is also excellent.

Rarely am I surprised, but I am genuinely delighted with this upgrade.

PS: I am not sure why others are having problems with the free Kindle Unlimited trial, but I received this offer while setting up my device.

Would have liked the 3 months Kindle Unlimited, but if you order on your phone it reverts to without.

Just like when you try to order using the paid for Prime Next Day Delivery, get to check out and it reverts to 5 days.

Would have liked to try Kindle Unlimited.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB

Screen size is its best and worst feature. Feels like reading a dinky book but is effortless to hold with one hand. Despite having the footprint of a standard book, once you factor in the bezels the reading area is still small. Cover art is a little hard to see/appreciate fully, when scrolling through lists. I couldn't exclusively use the kindle paperwhite without a larger colour device to browse for my next reading choices. One other advantage of the smaller size, including the larger bezel at the bottom, is that you don't have to move your eyes, and therefore your neck, quite so much. If you read the device on your lap, as I do, there's less eye/neck movement.

300ppi resolution but as the contrast isn't that high it's not immediately obvious. During daylight, the screen is a pleasure and a definite advantage. Doesn’t match traditional ink on paper; the screen is low contrast, laminated and inset slightly but for eye comfort, it's unbeatable. With the LEDs on, I find it comparable to a decent LCD re eye strain.

I don't use the auto light feature. I found that I prefer to stick to one compromise setting for all conditions (Brightness 12 / Warmth 13). Random light changes break my immersion somewhat. Note: The yellow in my photo is in fact a much redder orange, in real life. Unfortunately, my camera is a bit useless.

Very snappy page changes. Love the page turn animation. It's nothing fancy, but a nice touch all the same. The back doesn't have a rubberised feel like some suggest. It's more a very smooth, slightly textured plastic. The plastic over the screen isn't tough, so expect it to be prone to scratches, as will the back.

I didn't buy a third party (currently limited choices) or amazon case - I don't know whether true but I've heard they are no better than a cheaper generic version. I haven't used the wireless charging.

** It's difficult to get an accurate read on the battery drain. I can get between 30mins to an 1hr per each %, other times it drops faster at 6-10 mins per %. Exact same settings and roughly the same environment. I guess it's not consistent across the battery scale but overall, it is long lasting.

Re 3 months free Kindle unlimited - added seamlessly for me. As an existing subscriber, the free months were added to the end of my current paid period.

Love many of the new features but a few aspects slightly disappoint

There are many things to like about this new Paperwhite Signature edition: the increased amount of storage (32gb), the 'auto adjusting' front light with separate 'warmth' setting (particularly enjoyable when reading in low light locations), the USB-C charging feature. I am sure others may well like the wireless charging, the 'waterproof' feature and the various accessibility and audiobook streaming features (although I have not yet had a need to use these 'features').
However, there are a few aspects about this new signature paperwhite kindle I have found slightly disappointing: Where I have been holding it I have found my fingerprints are more noticeable than was the case with my previous kindle paperwhite (7th edition). In addition, while the reading area of the screen is certainly brighter, I have an impression it has less of a 'matt' finish than my earlier paperwhite. I also don't like the narrower side walls (which is where I tend to hold my kindle when reading it) as I have found my finger or thumb can stray onto the reading area which has occasionally caused the page to prematurely flip over to the next page (perhaps there is a sensitivity setting to reduce this from occurring, but if so I haven't yet found it!) Finally, and this is again a personal observation, but I wonder if the developers have slightly changed the positioning of the bookmark feature as I find it more difficult to activate than used to be the case (perhaps this may have something to do with the thinner side walls?).
However, on balance this is a terrific kindle and certainly one well worth considering if you are looking to change or upgrade your existing e-book reader.

Arrived today - ordered only 2 days prior
The new Kindle sync software works well. Kindle has never been quick at down loading the book data and this version is no different.
The larger screen improves the reading experience, the back light and temperature adjustments also helps.
Over all, an improvement on the my last Kindle from 2017. Would recommend to all those who read eBooks on a regular basis.

So, its sleek withh a great screen. Easy to hold in one hand.
However they have made changes to the software which I dont like.
The GoTo sync prompt now opens in a bar at the bottom of the screen. After accepting its recommended page/location you have to manually close the prompt. Why? The old system was fine.
The library system is now a confused mess. There was nothing wrong with the old system.
Why change it?
Personal preferences I know and others may like it.
Oh and you still cant download your emtire library titles in an excel friendly file.
I would be great to download titles with author, date bought, read/unread with the book covers.
At least then I could identify books I liked/hated in my own records.

Initially had issues downloading any Audible books, ‘missing asin’. I even purchased an Audible book through the Kindle a credit but couldn’t download it. This seems to be working now.

The user interface could use some updating.

I use Kindle since the first touch model tears ago. The new signature edition is brilliant: the light works well, the warmth settings work very well, it finally got USB-C and wireless charging. I hold the reader in one hand usually and I think the previous model had a better size – this one is wider and got less frame to to hold it.

I love the size (I hate the new software). The hold is great
It has everything on it that my oasis has bit the battery lasts so much longer. With the net charging cables it makes it so much easy to travel with.
