The Upgrade I Never Knew I Needed

I'd had my previous Paperwhite for 7 or 8 years before deciding to upgrade to this latest model.

It's an e-reader so, I assumed it would be pretty similar to my previous Kindle. However, this is definitely a worthwhile upgrade. I've no experience of prior iterations, but this has provided me with an enormous leap in enjoyment.

That extra 0.8" screen just makes the pages feel a lot closer to books (my picture shows a larger font for reading at night without glasses - you can get loads more text on the page). The refresh rate is crisp and fast, truly delightful. I had no real problem with the lights on the previous model, but the 13 additional lights and warm light make everything so clear. The auto-adjusting light is also excellent.

Rarely am I surprised, but I am genuinely delighted with this upgrade.

PS: I am not sure why others are having problems with the free Kindle Unlimited trial, but I received this offer while setting up my device.

Be careful!

Would have liked the 3 months Kindle Unlimited, but if you order on your phone it reverts to without.

Just like when you try to order using the paid for Prime Next Day Delivery, get to check out and it reverts to 5 days.

Would have liked to try Kindle Unlimited.

Dark mode disappointing

I got this version purely for the dark mode. On a Kindle App on my iPhone and iPad the dark background is jet black so the white text stands out nicely. On this kindle the dark mode can’t hold a candle to the humble app! ;-). DARK MODE IS PATHETIC, how could they get it so wrong? I’m disappointed and now I wish I had stuck to my old paperwhite five year old Kindle!

I 'upgraded' from my previous generation Paperwhite Kindle because the battery life wasn't holding up. The new one is excellent in that regard and the wireless charging (or USB C) is much easier and more secure.

I like the fact that this is now a little larger and can get (very slightly) more text on screen at the same font size. However, this comes at the price of not being quite so easy to hold, though I have now got used to it.

The big failing for me is that try as I might I cannot get text as readble as on the earlier version. I have no time for the 'warmth' setting and find the orange 'glow' rather off putting. I've set it at zero. The text, however, even with the brightness up, doesn't have the weight or contrast of the older model, and so is a little harder to read. It is unfortunate there is no contrast or font weight setting to fix this. OK, this is also something you get more used to - but put the Kindles side by side on similar settings and the superior clarity and readability of the older model is obvious.

So, unless you have issues, like I did, with battery life or a cracked screen, stick with the older model.

when changing page or navigating through the menu it briefly flashes bright white (when in dark mode) it's absolutely blinding when in a dark room, much easier to just use the kindle app on my phone

Expensive and unnecessary

Review is for the Kindle Paperwhite Signature edition.

All the positive aspects of this product are completely outweighed for me, by that fact that it is a completely unnecessary white elephant of a product.

It's lightweight, the screen quality is very good and battery life is more than adequate. That is as far as I can go with the positive aspects of this product and all these positives are available on much cheaper models.

In reality, this is completely unnecessary to absolutely anyone except those who intend to hoard all their books on one device, rather than downloading them as needed and deleting them from the device once read. A basic, 8gb, Kindle will hold on the region of 2-3000 ebooks. Even the most ardent reader is going to struggle to read that much on a 2 week summer holiday and, even when you delete your books from the device, they're instantly downloadable from the Amazon Cloud if you want to read them again, so actually, your library, even with ONLY 8gb device storage is, practically, unlimited.

Price wise, it is ridiculously expensive. Even the most basic Kindle product will hold over 2000 average size books which is more than adequate for most people and will save around £100 on the initial purchase.

Aside from the wireless charger, which is an additional £30, this is probably the most pointless product I've ever purchased. (The wireless charger was returned and I've left a separate review of that product).

Wireless charging is another white elephant. The (quoted) reading time is around 30 days. You won't use this device 24/7 and the likelihood is that you have a charger which is left unused for long periods of time. In most situations, its impractical to read while the device is being charged with the wireless charger, its far easier to charge and read with the cable connected, if that is ever a necessity. It makes far more sense to use what you already have than waste money on buying an over-priced and completely unnecessary wireless charger.

I find the size to be just a little too wide to hold comfortably and the power switch location, on the bottom of the device, right where I would support the device with my little finger, only adds to the awkwardness of this product as I often end up turning the device off when using it as I try to hold it in a comfortable position.

Adding a cover only makes this device even less comfortable to hold.

Aside from the unnecessary additional storage and wireless charging, everything else (such as battery life, display quality and weight) are available on far cheaper models.

NEGATIVES
Overpriced

I like the Kindle product idea but this is a completely unnecessary waste of money as it does nothing better than the basic Kindle but costs ridiculously more.

Very clear but a nightmare to navigate

This is a massive improvement on my old model with one major exception. The screen is so easy to read in any light and the ability to share books with me wife very welcome.
The big problem is navigation! When I finish one book it takes ages to figure out how to get back to the library! This is a major issue for a device who's whole raisin d'etre is to be an ebook.
It does have an option when you get there to only view unread books but this doesn't seem to work as many of the ones I have marked read still show up

Not the most reliable!

I would give it 5 starts but it just stopped working after 3 months.
It's always giving an "Application error" at startup, even after a soft reset.

The main reason that I'm giving only 3 stars is that there is no way to do a hard reset if it does not start properly, so I have to waste time to get a replacement. This includes going to the post office to return it and waiting for a new one for one thing that might have been solved just with an hard reset if that was possible.

My old kindle paperwhite broke bought the new generation & so not impressed. I use the kindle mainly when out & the main problem is once a book is finished you cannot remove from Kindle unless you're online
