The Upgrade I Never Knew I Needed

I'd had my previous Paperwhite for 7 or 8 years before deciding to upgrade to this latest model.

It's an e-reader so, I assumed it would be pretty similar to my previous Kindle. However, this is definitely a worthwhile upgrade. I've no experience of prior iterations, but this has provided me with an enormous leap in enjoyment.

That extra 0.8" screen just makes the pages feel a lot closer to books (my picture shows a larger font for reading at night without glasses - you can get loads more text on the page). The refresh rate is crisp and fast, truly delightful. I had no real problem with the lights on the previous model, but the 13 additional lights and warm light make everything so clear. The auto-adjusting light is also excellent.

Rarely am I surprised, but I am genuinely delighted with this upgrade.

PS: I am not sure why others are having problems with the free Kindle Unlimited trial, but I received this offer while setting up my device.

Would have liked the 3 months Kindle Unlimited, but if you order on your phone it reverts to without.

Just like when you try to order using the paid for Prime Next Day Delivery, get to check out and it reverts to 5 days.

Would have liked to try Kindle Unlimited.

I thought I would treat myself as my old 3rd edition is approaching its 11th birthday. That one, in fact, was the third as the first two both had hardware faults. It was easy to set up though I am not sure how many of my purchases are stored on the Kindle and how many on the server. I was not at all impressed by battery life which I suspect is the fault of the backlight. All was moderately well for a month until two days ago. I was unable to download any new books, receiving the "There is a problem" message - not exactly informative. I decided to try a reset, and from there on it was all downhill. All I have now is the Kindle picture which blinks off and returns every minute or so. The 40-second reset doesn't work, and it's too new for me to prise the back off and disconnect the battery. I am now awaiting a replacement, but if nothing has changed in 11 years I expect that, too, will flop after a week or so. Bring back the pinhole in the case and the hardware reset!

UPDATE
Kindle is maintaining its reliability record. The Paperwhite I was sent in December to replace the one I bought in November has now failed after just four months. Reliability is NOT the Kindle's middle name.

I would use this product as a doorstop, if I didnt want to return it and get my money back.
First when it arrived, after charging I noticed the battery level started to drop immediately - and after 2 days of normal use it was down to 50% - so much for months of battery life. I guess it would last for months if you turned it off, which somewhat defeats the purpose.
Then it failed completely. Stayed stuck on the "Kid under tree" screen even after repeated reboots and charging. It's dead - lasted 4 days.
I went to Kobo after a rotten experience with the last generation Oasis and was tempted back by Amazon's claims of extended battery life and usability - I should not have. I will use the refund on anything but another Amazon product.

UPDATE: DEVICE NOT WORKING AFTER 4 WEEKS

I bought my first paperwhite 2 back in 2013, and then in 2017 I got myself the then-latest flagship edition - Oasis 2, which is still in very good condition. Exactly because of this reason, I was slightly disappointed in this updated paperwhite. Its matte screen is no way near that of my Oasis 2 in terms of the sense of touch, plus being a fingerprint trapper.

Upsides are of course the warm lights, much longer battery life, and the larger size storage (and...no ads). But for the former, you can spend less than 50 pounds with the regular version paperwhite and for the latter feature can easily be dispensed with for many readers, unless you are in need of storage room for comics or audiobooks.

Tl;dr welcoming warm lights added, large size, no ads, long battery life; BUT, it's a fingerprint trapper!

UPDATE: 17 Feb yesterday, four weeks in with the device, it stopped working. It won't start and has been frozen. No pressing button can make the screen change. Now I have to return for replacement. Will update with new info with the replacement. It's a shame with the newly emerging quality control issue.

Returned this because the screen is too small if you need large font size for reading. If you have perfect vision it’s small light and portable. We bought a tablet with a 10+ inch screen, heavier but you can see the text.

Kindle Signature - Do not buy - worst Kindle ever

Bought Kindle Signature because I wanted to upgrade & increase storage space for more books (currently have over 2000 book). Issues experienced:- 1) downloading books is either very slow, or downloading stops mid-action, or download fails completely or screen freezes. Tried at home and in office so not wifi issue. 2) Application Error: had to continually restart Kindle to try to unfreeze screen but on restart got error and at a certain point most of books downloaded disappeared. 3) On the first Kindle device delivered the screen stuck flicking between blank screen & Kindle restart screen. 4) Screen slow to respond to touch or doesn't respond at all. I sent first device back for a replacement; Customer service very good, device delivered next day. Unfortunately, the replacement device has same issues with downloading, slow response to touch, application error, screen freezes & downloaded books disappearing after restart due to application error. I will persevere with Kindle Signature one more time. If I still have these issues, it will be sent back for refund.
The previous Kindle bought in 2016 was an excellent product and is still functioning, never had a problem downloading books at home or elsewhere over wifi so not sure why Kindle Signature is such an abysmal product. I don't think I will buy any more Kindle books as a result of such a bad experience.

Poor quality product and customer service

This is by far the biggest rip off from Amazon. Paying 180gbp for a sub par product. Very cheap plastic used. I worry if it drops then it will break into 2 pieces, not just crack. Software is slow as well, when I press the button to unlock it takes around 10 seconds to wake up and show the password entry screen/box.
The auto light detection is also not that great, screen navigation is bit clumsy. Screen could have been made hard glass so that it does not crack or break but no Amazon wants to sell its own screen protectors, covers for high price hence they will not make good quality stuff.

Overall cheap quality product from Amazon for a rip off price.

I wish someone develops competing product that is cross compliant - that will ensure that any user can buy a book from a seller and read it on their reader not be stuck in Amazon ecosystem - which is only making the owner a bigger billionaire.

Won't connect to kindle after a million tries and work arounds
