How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Lovely charming chamber piece denied cinema release by the court of metoo public opinion.
There is nothing in this film worth banning. It has been censored from the general public completely in USA so I had to buy this dvd from UK.
I detest monstrosities such as Weinstein etc but to witch-hunt every individual and tar them with the same brush is the road to destruction.

1.0 out of 5 starsDull, trivial, pointless
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 July 2020
Woody Allen has been churning these kind of pictures out for years: some are better than others - many are enjoyable. But not this one. I found both the main actors irritating - self-centred, middle-class ninnies on a trip to New York and who, through a series of unbelievable coincidences find their destinies. The dialogue felt forced; there was no tension; none of the characters were likeable. I almost didn't make it to the end (fell asleep first time round and had to go back into it to finish) and quite frankly, I wouldn't have missed anything if I hadn't.

Allen almost always comes up with good stories and great scripts, This story and script are good but......

He really does not understand young people (probably like he did not in Manhattan). There are no posters of Taylor Swift on the walls of the young characters, they do not talk about 'stuff' or go to clubs but go to old fashioned bars for middle aged people.
In fact, the character Gatsby is Allen himself but 50 years ago! He talks about old films, likes old fashioned music and even dresses like Allen back in the day!

In his typical Allen attitude, he looks down on the blonde girl because she does not have his intellect. It should have been the other way round. For a young college girl, a guy talking like a 60 year old man, Allen should have shown how tedious she found him.

Then there is the Latin character (Diego Luna), sigh. He cannot be a more stereotypical Latin guy. When he appears in the film he is dressed like a Zorro (facepalm); he is the one who hits on the girl and pays her ridiculous compliments. He is a cheat and al he wants is to have sex with her. Really annoying character.

Sigh! Woody Allen churning out yet another dull film populated with his own immature fantasies (characters and plot).
The central male character, Gatsby, is chokingly tedious and unrealistic. I'm shocked that after so many films Allen is still trying to ejaculate his neurosis on to the audience in order for us to see how profoundly clever and brilliant and nuanced and tender he is. Gatsby is an embodiment of Allen - lacking self awareness in his jerky, pretentious, self-absorbed and self-congratulatory behaviours but judging everyone else around him.

The script is an abomination: affected soundbites loosely strung together (with desperation for the audience to understand the subtext).
Character development is odd and flat.
Law and Fanning's performances were bordering on sad. The way they had been contorted in to these unconvincing oddball characters was misjudged, and the actors' strengths could have been played to more.
Even the patchy rain was done badly.

Nevertheless it was a slightly amusing distraction to have in the background whilst focussing on something much more worthwhile.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's actually a charming film....

I watched this on Prime - a new(ish) Woody Allen film, a romantic comedy, set in New York, what could go wrong? Surprisingly less than the critics would have you believe. On first watch, the film does have some unusual elements. Firstly, it's often been the case that Allen's dialogue can sound like it is coming straight from his mouth, but often it's only one actor that sounds like that. In this film, a number of the cast seem to be channelling him, but I find younger actors spouting words that only people over 80 (from Brooklyn) would say quite amusing. First, there's the central character, played by Timothée Chalamet, wearing the obligatory cord clothes, and sneakers, 'Woody's outfit'. He likes gambling and the seedy side of life, jazz etc. What's wrong with that? (Selena Gomez lends a sweet romantic counterbalance to the main character.) Then you've got his girlfriend, a wonderful turn by Elle Fanning, playing a Tucson bred college newspaper writer, cooky, who also has a very much Allen-esque way of spluttering out humorous dialogue, especially when embarrassed, when she hiccups. All very endearing. Then later she ends-up in a car with a filmmaker (not the only one of that noble profession in the film) played by Jude Law, who's also got an attack of the Allens. The point is, none of this matters. You accept it, because it's a Woody Allen film. There are great locations, Vittorio Storaro's cinematography, joyous music, largely from Erroll Garner, and a number of Allen's characters we have all seen before. One excellent turn is played by the actor and writer Ben Warheit, a truly unpleasant and unfortunate person, the sort that no-one wants to meet, written and delivered with such relish. Sprinkle over a charmingly romantic theme of rainfall on NYC and you have a love story made for the big screen. But we'll all have to put up with the small one for now. It's not real life, that's for sure, and all the better for it.

It was ok. It fell like a Woody Allen movie for hipsters. Very cliche topics that Allen keeps bringing to movies such as intellectualism, female neuroticism and, the confusing/ chaotic nature of love.
The main character is like a young version of Allen: Helpless, misunderstood and, conflicted. Perfectly suited scene where the main character ends up playing: "everything happens to me" by Chet Baker. Overall, is a sweet movie. The main actors are very cute but I would not say it is an amazing experience to watch this movie. He has done better and it feels that although I do love his movies, this one is slightly overrated.

I have always loved Woody Allen films, but this was a disappointment. A fine cast but the lead characters were so annoying that I could not engage with them. Beautiful shots of New York and wonderful music and humour. However it was lacking something for me.

Managed to watch the film in English with Polish subtitles which actually made the film more enjoyable. I don't think you can actually turn the subtitles off with this version.
