I’m a 31 yr old, 5’9”, ~160lb, moderately thin, athletic guy. Not in super muscle-bound shape, yet not a beer belly.

I also had some spare time to try and review these shorts!
The review is pretty long!! Sorry haha.

Review start:

I bought the Dark Navy (blue) color in size 32 because they were 1/3 the price to all the other colors! Yeah, slightly over $15 for awesomely made shorts that I wish I owned 10 years ago.

I usually never enjoy wearing the shorts I decide to buy, let alone purchasing shorts online. There’s that whole grey area where you decide the risk of purchasing clothing is worth it if it meets certain criteria for yourself. Alas, sometimes the quality simply isn’t there, or the material is uncomfortable (in my case sometimes shorts are “noisy” even), or the length is too long or too short... or even worse, that the shorts ride up inside causing “discomfort” in that area even knowing the inseam.

These shorts... are just perfect! Even the price couldn’t have been more perfect. I have never bought O’Neill branded shorts, or really any other name brand, or nice surf/skate geared casual shorts besides a few Dickies or Calvin Klein...and that was yeeeeears ago. I only had a couple shorts I semi-enjoyed wearing over the last decade... but I have yet to come across shorts as these O’Neill’s.

These O’Neill shorts feel light-weight yet sturdy enough so as to provide you some comfort that these well-designed shorts will last a long time by taking a beating from all the washes and perhaps any mishaps that come your way while wearing ‘em.

However, this review was made before I washed the new O’Neill shorts or wore them all day. But, after trying them on for under an hour I can tell these are great. Great fit as I normally wear 32 for everything...so the fit is right on target, yet I can probably tuck in a shirt all day and not feel overly tight at this size, while 31 size may be a bit tight and 33 would feel fine, yet slightly large I am guessing here. The material, feel, length are also perfect Even the button has a unique ribbon/belt design to hold it down other than the typical threads thru 4 holes that may eventually give way and/or fall off. The button also arrives loose fitted so the button is not tightly woven to the fabric as is typical for new pants/shorts. I thought my button was broken and loosened from the fabric and thought, oh that’s why it was on sale...but nope! The button elasticity provides more room. I’ve never seen that before for a button with this style. Yes, it’s been a while since I’ve bothered buying new shorts for summer. I just hope the “belt-loop” style button lasts forever!

My only negative is that I wish the pockets were a 1/2 inch or full inch deeper, but that’s being picky! Also, maybe the front (zipper) button hole is slightly tight while fitting, requiring more effort to push in, but it’s easier to pull out. That’s an easy fix if needed...no biggie. My iPhone SE fits inside just fine while walking. I don’t think my iPhone model, or car keys, etc. will fall out while I sit for extended periods and forget it’s there only to suddenly rise up quickly to go somewhere else, such as sitting in a car or library. Yet the pockets are deep enough to allow you to comfortably keep your hands in there while walking...if that’s your thing.

I wish more colors were not $45+ and only ~$15. But, quality costs money... Still not sure why the Dark Navy blue color was on sale! I love ‘emI hope I helped convince someone that is trying to find the perfect summer shorts as I was before summer is here again. I sometimes write a looooooong review for unexpected gems. These shorts are just that. I may buy another color for $45+ if these wash & wear well.

P.S.— I bought the last pair of ~$15 navy blue color in 32 size for backup purposes while writing this review because these shorts feel so great. I also bought some O’Neill Stretch Plaid Walk Shorts in Khaki Color (size 32) for only $17.99 on amazon too at the same time as these O’Neill Classic Plaid Walk Shorts I am reviewing, but these ones arrived first. Perhaps I can compare and contrast these two O’Neill shorts during or before the summer.
