VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 starsSuperb - but not a comedy.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2020
An amazing film - original, deep, touching and incredibly well written. But definitely mismarketed as a comedy. I typed in 'comedy' looking for a laugh and found myself unexpectedly touched by the truth and tragedy of these characters.

If you like deep films, appreciate excellent screen-writing, and can stomach some emotional honesty, then you'll LOVE this film. The dialogue is stunning and the acting is some of the best I've EVER seen. The subtlety of the script astounds me and the way the film pulls at you emotionally without any exaggeration of plot or character is just a masterclass in writing.

Like I say, not one to watch if you need a laugh or a lift, but definitely a must-watch if you appreciate grown-up writing, poignant themes and out-of-this-world acting. An unexpected 5 stars from me.

1.0 out of 5 starsMan children and inappropriate relationships excused
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2021
This is not a comedy. Its more of an insight into how society has made inappropriate relationships between older men and young girls, excusable and suggests its ok for men to never actually grow up. At one point it is alluded that the girl is only 13-14yo after the wife finds the husband and girl spooning on the sofa. Desipe the husband acting like a 15yo his wife (despite not being able to have babies) ends up looking like the baddie and has to forgive the man child and shift her life to fit around his.
Defo do not recommend.

The Truth is Out There
2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title. Not a comedy. Definitely not hilarious.

Not a comedy. Definitely not hilarious. Nothing exciting happens in this movie. There is no hero in this movie. Ryan Reynold doesn't do anything in this movie except appear occasionally wearing superman clothes. He didn't need to be in the movie. The movie is about a miserable marriage where the husband, who is an author, has writer's block and needs time of his own, so his wife drops him off at a winter cabin for a few weeks while she goes to work, and once in a while she visits him. He meets a young girl who had a twin sister who died and she can't get over it. They become friends. Just as they became friends the wife finds out, she yells at her husband and he says goodbye to the young girl and goes off with his wife. And that's that. I would never have wasted all this time watching it if the picture on the front cover had been a little more representative of the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars very budgeted move. nothing exciting happens. bit on the boring side.

not the most exciting film, it isn't a light movie. it is one that you need to sit down and watch and has a lot of strong and strange bonds. not a lot happens and there is not many scenes used. I was really shocked by how bad the film was with the actors and actresses used. It is an extremely budgeted movie and I nearly gave up watching 45mins into it. But I love films and need to watch what happens. and not a lot did

2.0 out of 5 stars Very misleading description and film cover art..

I just don't understand how anyone could watch this film and describe it as hilarious - it's really quite sad and almost depressing in parts. Yes the ending is fairly happy but it doesn't make up for the fact that this is described as a comedy when it really isn't. Worth watching if you're a fan of Emma Stone (as long as you're not preparing yourself for a comedy) as I think her portrayal of her character was pretty good. Otherwise a rather disappointing film..

Such a weird set up! The plot is thin and the cheesiness is thick! If you're avid fans of Emma Stone (Zombieland) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) you may want to take a look, but don't hold your breath!

This movie is classified as a comedy. I assure you, it is not. Yes, it has rare, funny moments, however, it is not a comedy. It is quite sad actually. If you are looking to have a laugh, keep searching.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly advertised and depressing

When searching for a film on Prime, I put in the criteria of a comedy. With the cover showing Ryan Reynolds as a superhero, along with 'HILARIOUS' being printed boldly, I thought I was in for a film that would not fail to make me laugh. No. I did not get a comedy.

This is a story about discovery, with the lead man (who isn't Reynolds) being a stuck writer, not progressing. I gave it 2 star because it was not as advertised. I wanted a bit of a laugh after feeling quite rough, and unfortunately this film just made me worse. Even if I had wanted to watch a serious film, I don't think I would have enjoyed this much more. Yeah the story was good, with a good concept of characters, however I just found it too slow moving and repetitive to a point that the novelty had worn off. Depressing. Predictable. Not fun.

Painfully not funny with a weird depressive/suicidal/paedophile feel to it. Good acting saves a poor script.
