VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 starsSuperb - but not a comedy.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2020
An amazing film - original, deep, touching and incredibly well written. But definitely mismarketed as a comedy. I typed in 'comedy' looking for a laugh and found myself unexpectedly touched by the truth and tragedy of these characters.

If you like deep films, appreciate excellent screen-writing, and can stomach some emotional honesty, then you'll LOVE this film. The dialogue is stunning and the acting is some of the best I've EVER seen. The subtlety of the script astounds me and the way the film pulls at you emotionally without any exaggeration of plot or character is just a masterclass in writing.

Like I say, not one to watch if you need a laugh or a lift, but definitely a must-watch if you appreciate grown-up writing, poignant themes and out-of-this-world acting. An unexpected 5 stars from me.

1.0 out of 5 starsMan children and inappropriate relationships excused
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2021
This is not a comedy. Its more of an insight into how society has made inappropriate relationships between older men and young girls, excusable and suggests its ok for men to never actually grow up. At one point it is alluded that the girl is only 13-14yo after the wife finds the husband and girl spooning on the sofa. Desipe the husband acting like a 15yo his wife (despite not being able to have babies) ends up looking like the baddie and has to forgive the man child and shift her life to fit around his.
Defo do not recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Touching Film - By The End
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2021

This is a quirky film, with somewhat flawed characters and it may provide the ocassional chuckle. I couldn't quite figure out what the main plot was or how the various elements came together but it made sense after a while. Its somewhat touching when Abby opens up to Richard. There is the obvious comic side to it, with the superhero sidekick showing up from time to time but the film isn't really about that as such, its more of an average joe film about average joes. There is something endearing about it though - I like the quirkiness and indeed I can relate to, or otherwise share, the appeal of escaping into your imagination, when things aren't so great in your humdrum environment, as an adult. I like this films subtlety. Yes I would recommend this film to others. Oh and also, I felt the ending was particularly touching but I admit, this film certainly won't appeal to all and it definitely isn't a 'regular' superhero film either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore The Box Design
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2014

As others have pointed out the DVD Box art paints the wrong picture of this movie,You would think it was some whacky Superhero comedy, especially with the misleading word "HILARIOUS" plastered across the bottom of the picture. What You do actually get is a thought provoking tale of a Man obviously on the verge of a mental breakdown who takes a trip to a small town cabin where He intends to re-build His failing writing career.Unfortunately He is accompanied on his journey by His lifelong Imaginary Friend Captain Excellent (The Chap on the Box). This is a Brilliantly acted film that ends on a Great twist.Ignore the box, enjoy the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Call me Paperman!

Poster is totally misleading! Definitely not a comedy super hero film. Like another said it feels a bit like Lost In Translation and surprised in the same way how much I liked the ride it took me on. A couple of dissociated people finding help in each other to head back to or make sense of the real world. A lovely pace to the proceedings and a nice little twist I didn't see coming near the end - doh. Ryan Reynolds isn't in it much, but seems to spend a lot of time on his Jim Carrey expressions. Lisa Kudrow did a good job of not letting the side down with her character. Her friends needed slapping though!

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet "finding yourself" movie with a couple of laughs
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2016

I agree with a lot of the reviews here that say this is not a comedy. It does have a couple of laughs but it is mainly a movie about people finding their way. I do think the advertising is embarassingly cynical - using Reynolds to sell the movie when he barely appears is poor and ultimately depressing when I think Emma Stone is such a fantastic actor. Despite that, I'd watched the trailer so I could guess what I was in for and I wasn't disappointed. There is no massive groundbreaking stuff here but it is sweet and the characters are like-able.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a superhero film. Great, bizarre, sad, melancholy, tragic. Fantastic.

Great film, not a comedy (as everyone else has pointed out). Touching, tense, weird and depressing. Fantastic. Cast is excellent. Story is bizarre, schizophrenic and strange, but touching at the same time. If you've ever been lost, as a person, you'll identify with Daniels and Stone. Metacritic slated this, but it's actually great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film, misleading DVD cover
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 December 2016

Good film. It is a bit of an odd choice of branding for the DVD cover. Putting Ryan Reynolds as the star of the film, and describing it as HILARIOUS made me think it was going to be a very different film to what it is. I think people expecting a more traditional "Ryan Reynolds" style comedy could be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars great indie comedy

From the cover I expected some kick ass fare, however Captain Exellent is an imaginary friend of a washed out writer. He befriends a teenage girl and so comes the great indie comedy that the Yanks make so well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious? No. Worth a watch? Yes

Not really a comedy, hilarious it definitley isn't (there is some gentle humour thoughout however). Instead it's lovely film about friendship and two people who are lost in their own worlds struggling to move forward helping each other out. Ignore the dodgy looking cover it's in no way a light hearted film. It is well worth a watch though especially if you've enjoyed Lost In Translation, reminds me a bit of that.
