Can I have a black pair too please!? Love 'em!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2020
**Quick update - had these boots for just over a month now.. I waterproofed them when I first got them, and have worn them all day, every single day since. And I still love them! And I still want a pair in black!**
I was lucky enough to see these advertised by Amazon as a deal of the day, and ended up getting a £100 pair of good quality suede Caterpillars for £26.68, and I'm glad I did. They arrived quickly and well packaged, and on trying them on, I found them instantly comfortable. I've owned several pairs of Cats over the past 20+ years, and in the good old days always found them high quality, hard wearing and of awesome longevity. In fact, I wore one particular pair of Colorados for 18 years. I don't mean I wore them occasionally, I mean I really, really wore them. I went to many far flung places, I waded through rivers in them (I dropped them in the Amazon River and had to fish them out), hiked through rainforests in Borneo, I trekked and climbed Macchu Pichu in them (three times), and I carelessly baked them in the Attacama. And they not only survived, with a little aftercare they looked awesome. So you could say I was quite a fan!
However, the last pair I ordered quite recently really fell short. They were too narrow, the leather seemed stiff and cheaper, and the stitching and finishing just wasn't up to scratch. They also seemed to point my toes inwards, and I sent them right back. I was seriously disappointed.
It put me off big time, I'll admit.
I'd liked the look of the Prepense boots for a while, but I now lacked confidence in the brand.
But £26.68? Yup. That tempted me!
With free return shipping, I took the chance.
And, I'm happy to say the chance paid off, and I love them.
I got them in Summer Brown, and they're a really lovely colour, especially for Autumn.
No, they won't last 20 years. But that's fine. They're not built to climb rocks, cross rivers, trek and hike all day in, blah blah blah. They're meant to walk country lanes, kick through leaves, go for picnics in the park, walk the dog, visit your nan, pop to the pub (social distancing, naturally).
They ARE quite a narrow fit (well mine are, anyway), so if you're broad footed you might need to bear that in mind. Some reviewers have said they're slippy too, but I haven't yet tested them out in wet conditions, so I can't comment on that yet. Once it's wet out again though, I'll give them a try and update my review accordingly. They're vrry grippy in the dry though, and being suede I'm not planning on wearing them when it's pouring down anyway. I'll be giving them a quick waterproofing to make them showerproof though, just to protect them.
Overall, I really like these boots. I'm not sure I'd have paid £100 for them, but for what I paid, I'm over the moon. I just need to break them in and get them really comfy and fitting well.
And I must admit, I 'd really love a pair in black now!
