How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Pedro
5.0 out of 5 starsA masterpiece that's best enjoyed after a few drinks
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2018
I love Equilibrium. It's one of my favourite films of all time, just because it's so hilariously bad. The acting is lousy, the script feels like it was thrown together in 10 minutes and the gun martial arts that enables the main character to dodge opposing bullets whilst barely moving is beyond stupid, but all of this makes the film a delight to watch. Don't listen to the 1 star reviews, those people have no sense of humour, this film is amazing, you just have to be slightly drunk to fully appreciate its genius.

3.0 out of 5 starsCould Do Better
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2018
Here is the problem. We are presented with a dystopia in which feeling is forbidden because feeling brings hate and rage which in turn bring war. And yet it is clear that the senior officers of that world all feel themselves. They are arrogant and worse, they hate those who feel. Perhaps with better writing and better acting, the world of Equilibrium could be better portrayed, but honestly, perhaps not. I think this might work better as a book than a film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good film. Still cropped like the original UK Blu-Ray release.

EDIT 2022: If you want to watch this film in its original aspect ratio in the UK you'll have to hop over to Netflix as they have it there.

This is second time I've bought this film. Reading the back of the case it says Aspect ratio 16:9 (Original Aspect ratio 2.35:1) Which made me think, oh finally this is the original anamorphic version. Well, its not. Its the same version from the last version of this film when it originally came out on Blu-ray. I could instantly tell this by the image on the disc and its exactly the same as what's on the front cover of the original Blu-ray release. This is just some sort re-issue and the image is still cropped to 1.75:1. Its exactly the same release, but with a different front cover. Why? Don't know. Guess we will never get the original 2.35:1 version here in the UK.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better

The movie is set in a dystopic future where human emotions are curbed by drugs as a means of preventing war. There is a brooding atmosphere with excellent cinematography and good acting by Christian Bale and Sean Bean. Much of it dissipates in the second half though, with distracting attempts at cliched and 'artistic' gunfighting. It ultimately ends up being an crowd-pleasing action-flick made for 'paying customers' as director Wimmer put it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok film, appalling footsoldier costumes disproportionately distracting though

The other reviews say enough about the content and style - in this respect it is a pretty good film if you are not looking for anything deep or that will blow you away. My biggest gripe though is the costumes. Seriously? It's almost as bad as trying to make us believe daleks would take over the world when all you'd have to do is go up some stairs to escape. Please try harder than just putting all the soldiers in black motorbike helmets and shiny black trenchcoats. a) it is just not menacing at all and b) they looked so impeded that a child could have got the better of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars Similar to 1984

This is a pretty good movie , tbh its spoiled somewhat by excessive matrix style improbable shoot ups , esp two the end , but the overall story line and acting is very good ...Its similar to 1984 except the premise is that in order to banish War , feelings in general have been banished , via everyone using a kind of anti depressant , so rather than 'thought crimes ' there are ' sense crimes ' . I Cldnt quite give it four stars , but its definitely worth watching , leaving you thinking about it for days after .

Vice Fire
3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining sci-fi thriller, but not perfect

I bought Equilibrium based on a montage that I saw of the fight scenes, which blew me away! Sure enough, they do not disappoint; a kind of Kung Fu with guns. I feel that they are no less thrilling that those of The Matrix, but do not be fooled into thinking that Equilibrium is a copy of The Matrix. The storylines do not mirror each other at all. This one is set in a futuristic world, where the inhabitants are required by law to inject themselves with a drug which prevents them from feeling any kind of emotion. Of course, someone rebels, John Preston (Christian Bale). I think that Bale was impressive as this character. I do prefer him as a role where he isn't in a full body suit and speaking in a stupid low, gravely voice. Not that I have anything against Batman.

Although the fight scenes are impressive, I couldn't ignore the fact that this film has a somewhat weak storyline. It poses questions that do not seem to be answered, such as why this emotion-inhibiting drug was introduced. This is in no way a boring film, the stunts are brilliant; but looking deeper, it is not terribly well made as storyline and plot goes. For action seekers, Equilibrium is just the ticket. Although, if you like films that will thrill in more ways than the special effects and stunts, I'm afraid that this one doesn't quite match up to the likes of The Matrix; but it's still a fairly decent film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad

This film is not bad however it is just a modern reworking of Fahrenheit 451 I would recommend that people watch that film first as it succeeds where this one fails.
