Some film!!! Travolta is mesmerising, a sugar puff in Grease this film has a dark tone. As a kid I the 70s (born in 72) I remember the poster on my brother's wall, I remember the tunes. But I didn't know the story, this film deals with hope, family abuse, aspirations, hopes, dreams, religion, loss of faith, friendship, death, and even a disturbing gang rape . The dancing is merely the ONE thing he is good at, an escapism, adored by the ladies envied by the lads... It distracts him from the dull 9-5 . Honestly I applaud this film for dealing with so much, New York looks unsafe and grimy, a lack of opportunity, Travolta excels, not only in the dance moves but as an actor, very believable and although flawed very likable character Tony. An outstanding film.

Yeah the soundtrack is banging, but very concerned for every bloke over 55 who's told me this film taught them how to be a cool dude as a teenager. Storyline is very weak, makes no sense, lots of random things happen, then some very horrible things happen. Has not aged well.

Saturday Night Fever is an interesting film. I think it's reputation undermines the quality of the film. People remember the poster of John Travolta in his now cliché dance pose, the hit Bee Gees single Stayin' Alive and the fantastic soundtrack that it came from. But how many people who know these things have actually seen the film? How many are mature enough to even understand it?

When I was growing up, I always heard about this movie from the same people that loved the musical Grease. A classic in its own right. But the movie they spoke about and the one I eventually saw were quite a contrast. These folks saw a reasonably family friendly movie about dancing and disco music. What I saw was a movie about Tony Manero coming out of his shell, growing up, how shallow life can be and human insecurity. As it turns out, many people I know have never seen the full movie. But instead grew up watching a family friendly edit that was released to milk the success of Grease. Typical.

Saturday Night Fever is a fantastic movie. It was originally released in 1977 and is well known as one of John Travolta's early successes. He plays the character Tony Manero (Travolta), an insecure young man hiding behind his good looks and reputation with his friends. He works hard during the week to have enough money for fancy outfits and to spend weekends at his favourite dance club. After meeting Stephanie Mangano (Karen Lynn Gorney), Tony starts to question his life and if there is more for him out there. The film was directed by John Badham and produced by Robert Stigwood.

The movie is well made. It shows a great contrast between the gritty surreal world of Tony's daily life and the super bright energetic night life. Everyone remembers when they were eighteen years old and felt like they were invincible. Those were great times. But life quickly catches up to us all and that is what this movie is about. Saturday Night Fever captures that vibe wonderfully. It does a great job of slowly taking it away piece by piece as real life catches up to the lead character. The pacing is right on. It doesn't feel slow, not for me at least. I was quite invested in the characters. It's was also helped along by the previously mentioned soundtrack. The disco rhythms from the Bee Gees, Kool & The Gang, The Trammps etc really took it up a notch.

The quality of the bluray itself was quite good. I thought the image was quite sharp. You could see many details in the characters outfits, the make up was well done and the disco scenes looked superb and colourful. The surround mix was also really well done. The scenes that didn't have music were very atmospheric and the one that did, they were incredible. I would love to hear this soundtrack properly in surround.

I could waffle on about this movie for a while but I'll stop here. I strongly recommend this movie but I will say, this is NOT for the faint of heart. There's a lot of things in this movie that is now considered highly offensive and would be removed from every platform if the wrong people see it. It isn't a family friendly movie. It is very dark, has a lot of mature themes, strong language, politically incorrect jokes and more. This is an adult film for mature people. If you want to watch something like Grease, you better look else where because this is definitely not for you.

When Saturday Night Fever was first released, not only was it a phenomenal success, but it had been 'cleaned up' for general audiences, which I would never had known had it not been for the excellent documentary led by Bruno Tonioli that was on BBC4 just before Christmas. Thankfully, this version is the original, definitely adult, one: and what a difference! Perhaps the biggest impact of this version is the blatantly sexist, male dominated environment that the film portrays. I wonder what today's generation of teenagers thinks when viewing the original version of this iconic film that shot John Travolta to fame?

The new Blu-ray edition of Saturday Night Fever is excellent. The picture quality is first rate but what really earns the release its five stars is the sound quality. During the dance scenes, the music really blasts out clearly, like you are listening to a CD of the Bee Gees. The sound I have heard on TV broadcasts or earlier releases has been flat and background in quality. This must be a definitive version. The 18 version is certainly not suitable for younger children but the dance scenes are definitely worth sharing with all the family.

A great movie brightened up on Blu Ray. The "extras" are mostly 10 years old from the 30th anniversary edition but there are one or two bits. The main thing is the transfer to Blu Ray is nice. Not had time to do an A B comparison with an older copy but first impression is good.

Apart from the great dancing this is a tutorial on how different out attitudes to race, women, sexual relations and violence were back then. It's only 35 years but it was a different world. A more thoughtful and in many ways more shocking film than I remember. Well worth re-visiting.

I first saw 'Saturday Night Fever' on release in the cinema in 1978 and the power of the music and images, energy of the dance sequences and unabashed non-politically-correct grittiness of the dialogue and narrative are every bit as captivating and moving on this DVD release, with its restored picture and soundtrack, as they were on first release on the big screen. I'd especially recommend the 30th Anniversary Edition with the two documentaries 'Catching the Fever' and 'Back to Bay Ridge', looking at the making of the film from a retrospective point of view and revisiting the actual locations used for the filming. There are also two added extras for those who might want to study John Travolta's dance moves in detail, as well as the director's, John Badham's, anecdotal commentary to accompany the film itself and '70s Discopedia' with added information on screen.
