How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsYou should be dancing, but it ISN'T just about that, it is so much more.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2016
Some film!!! Travolta is mesmerising, a sugar puff in Grease this film has a dark tone. As a kid I the 70s (born in 72) I remember the poster on my brother's wall, I remember the tunes. But I didn't know the story, this film deals with hope, family abuse, aspirations, hopes, dreams, religion, loss of faith, friendship, death, and even a disturbing gang rape . The dancing is merely the ONE thing he is good at, an escapism, adored by the ladies envied by the lads... It distracts him from the dull 9-5 . Honestly I applaud this film for dealing with so much, New York looks unsafe and grimy, a lack of opportunity, Travolta excels, not only in the dance moves but as an actor, very believable and although flawed very likable character Tony. An outstanding film.

1.0 out of 5 starsHow is this a classic?

Yeah the soundtrack is banging, but very concerned for every bloke over 55 who's told me this film taught them how to be a cool dude as a teenager. Storyline is very weak, makes no sense, lots of random things happen, then some very horrible things happen. Has not aged well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brave film of its time

Good to see this again after many years. It provides a stark and troubling picture of teenage life in the US of the 70s. There's a lot of language that wouldn't pass the hate speech censor these days. I hope it doesn't get 'cancelled' as retrospectively unacceptable! Great dancing, of course, and music. Travolta has great presence and the girl he rejects is also excellent. A really interesting mix of characters generally. It wasn't clear to me at the end how he intended to change his life but at least he was clear that he wanted to and I got a feeling that he just might succeed.

Well, there's Travolta and those moves and that suitand the Bee Gees and the disco epoch. But this is actually a movie about the rise of the upwardly mobile generation no longer content to follow in Daddy's footprints or to be tied to the hood or family convention. It's gritty and hard hitting in equal measure....as well as cool!

I'd only ever watched a few scenes many years ago so this quality dvd was worth buying. The only great bits are when John Travolta is dancing to the good music. This was back in 1977 when he was 24, and the year before he was in the film 'Grease'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes me back

Takes me back to my teenage days when Disco came alive, when music was produced by people who could sing and not just a load of noise and garbled, shouted or spoken words and no wailing and whining. 70's fashion, now called retro has made a comeback in some clothes design. World was much simpler then, no social media, people actually spoke to each other and made real friends.
Bring it all back please.

A lot of things about this film haven't aged well but those dance floor sequences and the opening title are frankly mesmerising

Good film, shame about the swearing, but realistic for the setting. Brought back some great memories and even my elderly Mother enjoyed it whilst in hospital on my laptop!!

Not much of a story but it’s all about the soundtrack which is epic - even if you don’t like disco or the BeeGees.

Last saw this over 30 years ago and had forgotten just how dark and bleak it was in places. Reflects the late 70's perfectly. However still just as enjoyable. Be warned, language is appalling, not just the "f" word but get past this and it packs a real punch. Music is timeless and JT's dancing is incredible. Its no wonder he became such a superstar.

Hubby and I were discussing the fact that this film never comes up on the TV so we decided to buy it. There really wasn't much in the way of a plot and boy were there weren't really any good looking people in the cast but for old times sake it was still worth watching some films are just part of history. It just kind of ended as well really didn't remember that but if you fancy a dip into the seventies get yourself a copy even if only to show yourself how far we have come :-)
