How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsUnmatched
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 August 2016
What can be said about this landmark piece of cinema that hasn't already been said? David Lean's masterpiece among a peerless body of work is presented here in a stunning remastered 1080p transfer, with a suitably beefed-up DTS-HD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. This is probably as close as home viewers are going to get to Lean's original vision of the audacious British officer who united Arabia's disparate tribes to fight off the invading Turks during World War I. Seriously, this film looks better than any 50+ year-old film should look, with a warm film grain, bright, colourful highlights and satisfyingly deep blacks. Add career-best performances from Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif and you have one of the greatest screen epics ever made.

Audio options are the original English track and a Spanish dub, while the subtitles are in English, Hindi and Spanish. Unsurprisingly for a movie with a running time of nearly four hours, the majority of the bonus features are bundled on a second blu ray disc. A must for lovers of the movie, these include an hour-long 'making of' documentary, featuring archive interviews with some of the key players involved in the film, including David Lean himself, a wonderful 20-minute featurette from 2009 with Peter O'Toole reminiscing over the film's production, and a short segment with Steven Spielberg, who declares Lawrence of Arabia to be his favourite film of all time. Can't argue with that. Essential.

1.0 out of 5 stars!!BLANK SCREEN!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2021
loading disc ok up to pressing 'ok' to start actual movie; thereafter only soundtrack comes thru as the screen remains totally blacked-out; guess this is reason for the low price of 3 pounds; otherwise called 'deception'; still, cant be bothered to ask for a refund ; suppose it just hurts amazon's image...

I don't understand the fuss about this film. The background scenery is excellent but where is the actual storyline? I switched off after about an hour and a half as I was bored waiting for something to happen.

The reviews for all 3 versions are amalgamated, which is confusing. Generally there is only one version of a DVD but in this case there is (1) a single-disc version (film only), (2) a 2-disc 'Superbit' version (film only) and (3) a 2-disc version (film + additional features). Not clear if the one with the additional features is the same quality as the single disc fuzzy version or better - or possibly even the same as the Superbit one. The Amazon description for all 3, including the single disc version, describes the film as being 'spread leisurely across 2 discs' and many of the reviews mention the suboptimal disc change time with regard to the intermission.
Having recently been in Jordan, including Wadi Rum where a lot of the film was shot, I wanted to see this (especially having missed it on TV at Christmas) and was pleased to read about the superior image quality. £17 seemed a lot for an old (albeit remastered) film, but I thought that was due to the length of the film etc. Was disappointed to discover that it was only 1 single-sided disc and the picture quality, having zapped through the scenes, was reminiscent of a VHS tape!
Have now ordered the 'Superbit' version (used) and will wait for it to arrive before watching this film and am returning the original purchase on the basis that it was not as described. To save anyone pointing it out, I know that in the small print under 'number of discs' it says '1' but these details are often wrong and the overall impression from the web site is that all versions have the high quality picture. Could potentially have been a double-sided dual-layer disc, though I only have 2 double-sided DVDs - Lethal Weapon 4 and something else from years ago.
Have given THIS SPECIFIC DISC with the yellow/orange cover (as opposed to the film, which I expect to be good) 2 stars due to the inadequate technical quality. Would presumably look ok on a small TV but not on a 42" plasma screen or even a 32" CRT. It would be preferable for reviews about a film to be separate from the media, especially when there are different versions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Grand, romantic but rather superior (derog) epic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2009

Broad, ambitious, sweeping, artistic and painterly film, in the best epic style of legendary film maker David Lean. It also has the man's worst excesses - chliched and naive romanticism, sentimentalism, visual splendour for the sake of visual splendour, or the sake of his great reputation, and an interminable running time. Yes I know that technically this is easily a 5 star film, and I do love one or two scenes but my 2 stars are for it just not being my cup of tea.

Visually, great vistas of cinematic opportunity are seized with a very sure conviction that these would work, and they mostly do. The photography rightly won the Oscar, but then it had great locations to work with. Narratively, liberties are taken with the truth, but particularly with realism for dramatic effect, with everyone speaking English instead of the subtitles they would probably use today. The Robert Bolt script is bold as you'd expect, but lacks the restraint of his best works and for me, jars a bit. And Lean always backed his dramatic prowess as well, but in my view with much less reason to do so, as it is the grand dramatic gestures he makes in this film (and others) that reveal many of his flaws listed above.

Yes, to make any piece of dramatic art you are taking a risk with abstracts like human drama, psycological depth, heroicism, pathos and grandeur vying hard not to be overturned by lurking enemies such as sentimentalism, forced drama, unrealistic dialogues, artistic pretentiousness, sensationalim, worthiness, bathos and grandiosity. For me L of A tries just that bit too hard to achieve its greatness, flirting dangerously with the excesses mentioned, and while it is no 'Cleopatora' (1963), it is definitely too 'worthy', self indulgent and just too overdone for my own liking - but what am I, a mere spec in the distance against the mighty dunes of staunch admirers of this rather garish, rather blatant piece of so called great cinema. Of course it was going to win all the Oscars, but then what the hell have that lot ever known about good, entertaining cinema? Attenborough borrowed heavily from the formula to make another very worthy picture twenty years later, and guess what - that won the lion's share of Oscars as well. It just helped confirm what I thought about this sacred cow of a movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Blue Ray Version?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 February 2010
This is a BIG film in every meaning of the word. Yes it is best viewed on the 'big screen'; however with the introduction of ever larger domestic TV screens it's not bad! Not bad its brill! The only thing is it is not in Blue Ray. Why is this? There are so many average - poor films in HD why not stunners like this?
Come on the film industry, get your act together!
