Excellent, moving film starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
The 2-disc CE (Collector's Edition) is well worth having: it includes 'People like us (an excellent 60-minute 'Making of'), a 75-minute documentary of interviews with AIDS patients, 6 very good deleted scenes, the video for Bruce Springsteen's 'Streets of Philadelphia', the original 5-minute 'Making of' featurette, and other extras. i bought this because i found the song very moving and wanted to check out the film. i gave up after 10 minutes. it started out like a guided tour of philadelphia and the short part i saw of the plot looked like they were trying to cram the storyline into a short time scan, which didn't work for me. passed it on.

I saw this movie on TV and had to buy the DVD to keep in my collection and rewatch. Tom Hanks was awesome, Denzel Washington great and the lovely Antonio Banderas as eye candy. The story treats the HIV/AIDS virus with compassion and shows how some people have hatred and fears. I felt so much sympathy for Tom Hank's character and was cheered by the support of his partner, family and friends.

Tom won his first Oscar for his performance in this film – a year later he won his second, with ‘everyone’s favourite film’ – Forest Gump!
Philadelphia was an enormous success – costing 26 million $ to make and netting a whooping 206 million.
The theme of course has been done many times - reluctant lawyer takes on unwinnable case – To Kill A Mocking Bird, A Time To Kill, My Cousin Vinny & A Few Good Men, to mention but a few. This film was based on a true event.
The synopsis is well known, so there’s no point in me going there. I would just say that this is a very stylish film that holds your attention throughout and is a thoroughly satisfying watch. Its 5 stars all the way. Hanks is such a fine and likable actor that it doesn’t matter if he’s a numbskull, a gangster, a prison warder, a castaway or a soldier … you just buy into that rather laidback, thoughtful character?

Bruce Springsteen came on the radio at work, my friend said it's the song off Philadelphia, never seen or heard of it, when she said it was Tom Hanks, well he's a fantastic actor so had to watch. What a brilliant film, very sad at the same time...definitely worth a watch...

for Hanks is well deserved.

Philadelphia is an interesting film worth watching as it was the first film created with 'big stars' that tackled Aids. The star power of this film alone is wonderful with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington to name two. I describe the film as 'interesting' because it is similar to the lives of two lawyers in America who had been discriminated against due to being diagnosed with Aids therefore you can see the magnitude of hope that this film held for change.
This is a great example of a sickness melodrama as well, for those who study film this would provide you with some very interesting points.

This is one of my best films: Tom Hanks is astonishing. However, when I saw it originally, one of the most moving scenes is the sick Beckett with attached drip feed listening to a Callas aria with no commentary, just ecstasy in Becket's face. In the most recent version, this scene is quite different: his lawyer is watching, it's a different aria and Becket makes a commentary. Question: are there two versions of the film?
