Excellent, moving film starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
The 2-disc CE (Collector's Edition) is well worth having: it includes 'People like us (an excellent 60-minute 'Making of'), a 75-minute documentary of interviews with AIDS patients, 6 very good deleted scenes, the video for Bruce Springsteen's 'Streets of Philadelphia', the original 5-minute 'Making of' featurette, and other extras. i bought this because i found the song very moving and wanted to check out the film. i gave up after 10 minutes. it started out like a guided tour of philadelphia and the short part i saw of the plot looked like they were trying to cram the storyline into a short time scan, which didn't work for me. passed it on.

Philadelphia is an interesting film worth watching as it was the first film created with 'big stars' that tackled Aids. The star power of this film alone is wonderful with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington to name two. I describe the film as 'interesting' because it is similar to the lives of two lawyers in America who had been discriminated against due to being diagnosed with Aids therefore you can see the magnitude of hope that this film held for change.
This is a great example of a sickness melodrama as well, for those who study film this would provide you with some very interesting points.

I have only just now watched this film, for the first time. It is obviously dated, and I took that into consideration. It is of course a great film, especially for its time regarding the subject matter, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed, especially as the two main actors were, and of course still are, arguably major film stars. I could not help but keep 'glancing' in my mind at 'The Silence of the Lambs' film as I was amazed at how many actors from that film was in this one! I have watched that film several times and would regard it in a similar vein to this one, in referencing the acting/direction ... a little cheesy and over-dramatised but still very good, even today.

Powerful film. My only small criticism is that I felt the relationship between Andy & Miguel could have been a little more 'real', with more parallels drawn between their relationship and the lawyer's with his wife. However, given the time this was released, perhaps the lack of focus on his love life was for a very good reason - times have changed somewhat!
Otherwise, excellent film and a stark reminder of how we've progressed as a society.
