How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsTimbo's on the toes & That's the way it goes!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 April 2018
Timberland have always been the front runner in footwear (see what I did there?) These are no exception. Fit like you had gloves on your feet. Comfort and warm toes all in the same place. Even in the snow (Tested' and they passed) Waterproof and deceivingly light in weight! About as heavy as Nike Airs' True Story' Smart as' If they're to be used for night's down the pub, in your chinos or combats! I got them for the English weather and dog walking... I love them! A wipe and they are clean (Not that I go around jumping in puddles like a loop case) Just the splashes and such that I have had on them, came straight off with a wipe 'Juan Sheet' They are a 'Proper Tidy Bit of Kit' Don't take my word for it, I'm off me swede mate lol Looking good in my boots though!

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty, but not good
Reviewed in Canada on 5 April 2021

Beautiful and stylish boot, it is considerably comfortable and warm, but it is not nearly waterproof, at most water resistant.

I bought the boot and used it only once on a 7-hour trail, where I walked in the snow, in wetlands, mud, etc. It resisted well for the first two hours, but after that my feet were soaked and frozen. As it was cold, the boot did not dry and I had to spend the rest of the days with the boot wet.

When I got home, I poured water on the boot to get the mud out and left it to dry in the bathroom and to my surprise the boot completely changed color. I contacted Amazon, who promptly understood the problem and sent me a new boot. I will use it soon on another track in the next few weeks, so I’ll do an update after using it.

So, for comparison, I'm attaching three photos of the new boot (sent by Amazon), two photos of the boot after drying (boot used only once), two photos of my old boot, which I have had for almost six years, and one last photo with the three side by side.

I hope this review is useful and gives greater transparency about the quality of the product.

2.0 out of 5 stars You want Vietnamese, NOT Cambodian build

Verified Purchase
Some other review talked about "Country of Origin" and wow, couldn't be more true. Tried these exact boots on in DSW and was ready to purchase until I found them here 25% discounted. Fit and feel could NOT have been more different. Main difference was the DSW version were made in Vietnam, these were made in Cambodia. These were way smaller and of poorer build quality... stitching, gluing, color evenness. Well worth the extra $25 for the DSW Vietnamese version.

2.0 out of 5 stars ... these boots about five years ago and they were great (waterproof, comfortable and never got a blister)

I purchased my first pair of these boots about five years ago and they were great (waterproof, comfortable and never got a blister)! My second pair I purchased a couple of months ago and was greatly disappointed. The quality has changed quite a bit and these boots left huge blisters on my feet when I wore them on my six day hiking trip that I had to cut short. After a close examination with my old boots I discovered that the inserts are greatly different (not padded or contoured to my feet), the leather is not as nice, they are NOT waterproof as advertised and they are hard as rocks to walk on. Although both pairs of boots look identical, there is a huge difference in quality! I wish I could return these but unfortunately I did not wear these for a couple of months past my purchase.

I have purchased at least 6 pair of these over the last 10 years. I swap them out as needed when in they get wet to allow them to dry. Obviously I loved them when I first purchased them, but the last 2 pairs have dropped in quality significantly. They have been far less comfortable, which is a bit subjective. I have even replaced the in soles with some Timberland Pro ones that I love in my other boots,, but there isn't as much support in the footbed. The "leather" has worn really badly with a lot less wear than the previous pairs. I wore out the soles on the first 3 pairs but the leather was cracking a little but still serviceable. The newer ones only get worn on dry days because the water resistance of the older ones have been replaced by dew on grass getting your feet wet. (HARDLY WATERPROOF AS THE TAG ON THE SIDE SAYS) I rated 2 stars because they are better than the cheapest hikers you can buy at a big box store. They used to be a great buy, but unfortunately no longer, they are $50 boots now for $80 . You can see in the pictures that the soles look near new but the leather is very worn and the toe is starting to separate. These new ones are made in Cambodia. The next to last pair was made in Vietnam and had slightly better leather wear. I have replaced them with a pair of Irish Setter hikers and Timberland Pros that are really comfortable and tough, but much heavier which is a bummer.

Monsieur Mouton
2.0 out of 5 stars Too narrow, unhappy with fit.
Reviewed in the United States on 9 September 2018

I got these for a long trip involving lots of hiking and walking. I bought them a few weeks in advance so that I could break them in. I got them in a 9, my normal size, but the first pair was very narrow and squeezed my toes uncomfortably. I exchanged them for a size up, which left me with no time to break them in for my trip. I honestly noticed very little difference between the 9 and 9.5: both squeezed my toes and both fit awfully snug. I had bought Timberland brand inserts for these, but even after I'd cut them down to dimensions of my feet, they wouldn't fit in the shoe. The toes of the insert, in particular, bunched up inside the shoe and wouldn't flatten: there just wasn't enough space for the company's own insert to fit their own shoe.

This isn't my first time being disappointed with Timberlands. The first Timberland boots I owned really messed up my ankles and for several years I vowed never to wear Timberlands again, thinking they were just an overhyped brand charging more for looks than actual quality. I'm kicking myself now for not trying the wide size (something I've never had to do with another boot), but I'm mostly mad at myself for not looking at Chippewa or Salomon first, two brands that haven't disappointed me and which haven't upped their prices because they're considered "street wear."

I've heard elsewhere that their sizing is all over the place. My recommendation is to look for a brand that hasn't moved down the fashion direction (I'd say Red Wings has followed Timberlands path, unfortunately), but which is aimed more at producing quality, well-fitting boots.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great fit, but sole separating after 7 days!

I was looking for a comfortable, lightweight, waterproof pair of hiking shoes for a 10day PNW hiking trip. After trying Merrels and Keens, I found these to be most comfortable, have solid reviews, and I thought I could use them after my trip for work (construction). Unfortunately after day 7 of hiking, the sole is showing signs of separation from the boot. These boots have not even seen water yet and they’re already falling apart??? I’m not even going to deal with trying them at work because I know for a fact as soon as they come into contact with the sludge and mud on a construction site, they are doomed! It’s very disappointing because I loved the look, comfort, and ankle support (thus 2 stars) but I’m not about spending $100 for something that can’t last 7 days…
