A marvellous cop drama - don't miss it!

I know I'm a little late to the party with this one, but I have to say how much I enjoyed this first season of Blue Bloods. And the good news for me is that there are at least another 10 seasons left available for me to sit back, chill out, and watch! I know that some would argue that the set-up of this New York police drama is far-fetched. I mean we have a NY Police Commissioner, Frank Reagan, who has two sons, one a detective, one a patrol officer. Frank also has a daughter, who is an assistant D.A, and a father who is a retired, former Commissioner. If you add in the fact that all of these family members regularly (most episodes) sit down together for dinner, and often find themselves attached to the same investigations, you could be forgiven for thinking that it's an implausible scenario that won't work - but it does! After all, this is that parallel universe aka TV world, where life is portrayed slightly different to what we daily see around us - and that's fine by me, I watch this for the escapism it provides.

The superb acting, the strong script, and the setting of New York City make this a winning combination. I particularly like how the characters, and their situations develop as the series progresses. Most of the 'cases' are perhaps tied up a little too neatly and conveniently within each episode, but that in no way diminishes my admiration for this cracking drama. Also, I'm as open-minded as the next man, but I like the 'comfort' of watching a drama that tackles some difficult issues, and deals with the darker side of human nature, yet does it without the need to include gratuitous violence, or bad language (so not an F-bomb in sight). As for the actors, well they are all spot on, although Tom Selleck as Commissioner Regan, and Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Regan give stand-out performances in my opinion.

This box-set contains 22 episodes, and let me tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them. If you're seeking your next American cop drama, look no further - get your teeth into this 1st season of Blue Bloods and, like me, you'll soon be hooked!
Many thanks for checking out my review, I hope you found it of use. 🎬📽📺=😊

GREAT START TO AN ACCLAIMED SERIES
Verified purchase
A rare (unique?) drama series about three generations of a family closely linked with the law. New York's Catholic Reagans comprise a past and present Police Commissioner, a detective, an assistant DA and new recruit Jamie. Dinner sessions are lively as they discuss issues encountered.

As with NYPD BLUE, the star here is New York itself - the series out and about in a city crammed to capacity with people of different races and religions reflecting all walks of life. A bustling mix, a volatile one too - each day with crimes to keep law enforcement officers busy.

Tom Selleck heads an impressive cast - his Commissioner Frank Reagan arguably an idealized version of how America would like all its high ranking officials to be, the epitome of integrity.

Here very much is a drama with heart, a family doing its best in challenging circumstances. Movingly it has yet to come to terms with the death of brother Joe - killed on active duty, the alleged details suspicious. Chillingly there would seem a highly organized rogue element in the force - Joe a victim, Jamie possibly to be targeted....

22 episodes. Interesting cases. Much action. Thought provoking issues prompting much animated discussion at family meals. Examples? How far can one go to make a terrorist reveal where a car bomb is about to explode? How to proceed when diplomatic immunity protects a serial rapist? Should certain drugs be legalized?

Fine bonus features show how the actors were chosen and how they respond to the characters they play. Long serving police officers advise, ensuring authenticity.

Much else besides, this in so many ways a truly impressive box set.

Excellent but not for me
Verified purchase
I was knocked out by Jesse Stone on the telly - more of that later. I felt in good company with the mature Tom Selleck. So I bought first of all Magnum - a very young Tom Selleck and then pondered for some time before buying Blue Bloods. I have no experience of families and am not a town lover. This series has a lot of both. Really it is a twist on the normal format of getting a group of people together and creating the stories round them. Yes the format works but not for me. Grisly grisily violence I am trying to avoid and this series has an awful lot of this. Also I find many people sitting around a large table very uncomfortable. You cannot eat and act. The shape of the table makes for the shots to be very awkward. And yes to they do manage to show some lovely citiscapes - but I prefer fresh air the sea and the countryside. Tom Selleck and Len Cariou are excellent and it is good to see older actors given parts that are positive and caring. I suppose you could say Donnie Wahlberg is really the lead actor and he plays his part well too although with far to much violence for my taste.

Selleck on top form.

A very engaging cop drama set in New York City, with fine performances from the whole cast. There are interesting 'special features' for those who'd like to know how the show got made.

Each episode has a main and a minor arc to hold viewers' interest. The writing is convincing apart from the additional thread running from the first episode about the Blue Templars, a secret sect within the police department. The latter plot thread, based around the youngest of the police commissioner's sons, would have been fine if resolved in a single episode, but the way it persisted in the background until the last episode didn't mesh (for me) with the family bonds that drive this show.

I love New York City. Any show set within its confines is a winner with me.
The particular thing I like about this show is the emphasis on the importance of good family stability.
That, and it's a cracking good cop show!

Tom Selleck ..... Always a Good Watch !
Verified purchase
Anything starring Tom Selleck is usually a good watch and Blue Bloods is no exception .... You won't be disappointed. Also you don't necessarily have to watch the series in any order as most episodes is are complete story(s).

Liked everything about the Series - typical Dick Wolf quality product - made unmissable by the excellent cast and story-lines - law and family. Didn't like it when I got to the end of the road series-wise!

Very good

Plenty of police work, with just enough of the family to hang it all together and provide additional interest without distracting from the crime scenes. A very good series. On 2nd watching de-rated from 5 star (excellent) to 4 star (good).
