Firstly, the laces are made of polyester or some such cheap feeling and looking material. What happened to good honest cotton and quality laces? Secondly, the eyelets, apart from the top one on each side, have no metal reinforcer. Consequently, after a few weeks of tugging and tightening I imagine they will rip through and break. WHERE IS THE QUALITY? WE WANT TO BUY NICE THINGS BUT THESE DAY'S IT IS ALL CRAP AND DESIGNED ON PURPOSE - I REPEAT: ON PURPOSE - TO WEAR OUT! There is no way on what was once a green and lush earth that we are gonna save the planet or humanity's sad a** as long as we are all happy to carry on frantically buying cheap and exploitative resource-wasting crap. Like these sneakers. The answer is a social one; as much as a political one. What was even more upsetting was that I repeated exactly all of this to my daughter and all she replied was: "They look nice, though!". There is no hope.
UPDATE 16.5.21: I have replaced the laces with 100% cotton laces natural colour from e b ay and it has enhanced the sneakers no end! Also: I am finding them extremely comfortable and they are wearing well, so have upgraded the rating to 3 stars. UPDATE 27.9.21. As predicted: one eyelet has given way. The top one on the right/right hand sneaker. Even though I prophesied this I am VERY UPSET. I had a very Freudian moment trying to make sense of it all. It feels like the the times we are living in: we know it's all gonna turn to crap but we just can't stop ourselves (or it). I'm going out to get a pack of Marlboro full strength. I know I can at least rely on that full Virginia flavour.
UPDATE 28.10.2: well it started going just as I predicted: the eyelets, being unreinforced, started to give out. I was really disappointed, and yet still surprised even though this is the very thing I predicted. It is because I tell everyone that I am a philosophical pessimist and at the core of each pessimist is a frightened optimist. Anyway. Before it all got really upsetting, I resolved to REINFORCE THE EYELETS. I took the sneakers to my local independent shoe repairer [his name is Pete] and I said: "Pete. Look at this. It is so disappointing. Can you put some metal eyelets in before it all goes south?" Pete replied: "Yes. What colour?" I hadn't planned that far ahead and so we debated colours. In the end, Pete suggested red. It seemed reasonable, so I went along with it. My first thought had been 'blue'. Well.I paid up front and Pete said: "Come back next Thursday." That was today. I ran down to the shop all excited. Pete saw me running up and didn't think I was gonna stop in time because I was moving like a steam train. Luckily for me, another customer saw me coming and held the door open at the last minute. This was really helpful because I definitely needed that extra six feet to stop. Turned out the customer was called Mary and she hung around while Pete got the sneakers. When he put them on the counter: BOTH ME AND MARY WERE BLOWN AWAY! Turned out that Mary's husband had an IDENTICAL PAIR but pre-eyelet emplacement. As you can see from the photos I have uploaded: Pete was SPOT ON in suggesting red eyelets. They are AMAZING. Not only has this extended their functional life time but they also look ONE HUNDRED TIMES BETTER! Really cool! God knows why Vans have to be so damned cheap and not do this in the first place. They want people to buy their kit? Then make it look good[really good] and don't be cheap b*****ds! Only downside is that when I tried to take the sneakers off the counter, Pete said: "Turns out red eyelets cost more than any other colour! I need another six l." Well. I wasn't upset at all. I was still riding the crest of that sexy red eyelet sneaker enhancing wave!

3.0 out of 5 stars I felt let down by the laces and the eyelets.
