Customer Review

This novel is a wonderful short story. There is a ship journey from New York to Buenos Aires. Chess world champion Czentovic plays a game against amateur chess players. At this game he encounters Dr B who hasn't played chess for more than 20 years. Dr B comes to help the amateur and the game finishes equally. Dr B was a young lawyer in Vienna when the Nazis occupied Austria. Dr B stayed in the interrogation room of the Gestapo. He became a professional chess player when he was staying alone ınside a hotel room. After reading this book my opinion changed on playing chess because I realised it's very complicated. This book also showed me that one day we can lose our reputation.
