Customer Review

As a walking shoe this would get 4 stars, but as a running shoe I'd give it a complete miss, and I've run for more than 40 years on all sorts of terrain. It's solidly built with a firm sole made from a pretty hard compound that should wear well. The sole has fantastic grip but isn't very flexible. Added to that is a thick mid-sole with surprisingly little cushioning and an Ortholite inner sole which is little more than 2-3mm of some sort of high density foam. The end result is a firm and solid shoe which is absolutely fine for walking, especially when you replace the Ortholite with a decent gel inner, but which is very hard and unforgiving for running. The official Salomon website even rates this as being suitable for only 'one run or less' per week. Thankfully I bought it mainly as a walking shoe and so am pleased with it. As other reviews have pointed out, you need a full size up from what you normally take to get them to fit but, when you do that, they fit snugly. I've got several Gortex jackets etc. and gave up years ago believing the 'breathable' nonsense. And sure enough, after an hour in these shoes my feet are good and sweaty. That's not the fault of these particular shoes, it's just the fact that none of these 'breathable' materials work as well as is claimed and is a price you pay for them being waterproof. One last, and trivial, point is that in black/grey they look pretty dull and nondescript. So the first thing I did was put some red laces on them to give a bit of colour. In doing that I found that the eyeholes for the laces are very small and several of the hiking boot laces I have didn't fit. Like I say, not a big deal but something to bear in mind if you ever want to replace the laces.
