TOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE

A tricky one to score.

The actors do their best with a script that really hasn’t aged well.

When Marty decides he wants a threesome, he does his best to convince his wife it’s a good idea. Laura is reluctant, but when Marty brings Didi home, one thing leads to another and…

For an extraordinarily long time, Marty thinks he’s the king of men. The fact that he’s finished, asks if they want snacks, leaves the room, sleeps on the sofa, while his wife is still in bed and moaning with Didi, doesn’t occur to him as a problem. That Laura then goes on an exploration of every woman she encounters feels very cliched and out of date. The fact that other women pursue her with a kind of 1960s stereotypical-lesbian aggression is deeply uncomfortable and disappointing (probably because the film is only twenty-one years old).

There is, however, a beautiful moment right towards the end, where Marty is given some home truths about what is, and what is not, a lesbian.
