No it has a switch you press which is on top of base. These are very nice sparkly lamps. They also charge phones etc whilst plugged in, but switched off, so basically you don't have to have the light on to use the USB function. Hope this helps :-)

No smell I bought 4 and they are all great.
I did wash all the shades in soapy water and let them air dry before assembling. Hope this helps

I've got a low wattage clear bulb in it, you can use a higher wattage bulb if needed, the fact that you can charge your phone up as well is great
