Refreshingly non woke, relatable , entertaining, dysfunctional and amusing movie

Since watching The Fuckers and Meet the Parents my family always look forward to deNiro in comedy movies and he did not disappoint. All the acting and the whole production I thought was excellent.

Most of all the whole dysfunctional family scenario was very relatable .Family members struggling with values versus self interest, all fighting for their niche. Whatever the age of the viewer, kids can align with the present and older family members with memories past.

Families now struggling with decisions to merge with elderly grandparents who are reluctant to give up their independence as well as finding they're having to negotiate a new role in the pecking order, will doubtless see the irritations caused along the way as everybody tries to adapt to the new normal.

There's something for everybody and kids really find it laugh out loud funny.

Non-woke in 2021, who'd have thought!!?

I was apprehensive to watch this because it was made this year (2021), meaning that I was expecting it to be full of woke lecturing and subverted ideological waffle but to my pleasant surprise it was just a normal film. Very funny in parts and it's really endearing to see such fine talent (de Niro, Thurman, Walken etc.) working together in a silly film like this, that is also touching in parts. The little girl who is obsessed with Christmas is absolutely fantastic and it really is nice to see de Niro play such silly yet sensitive role. The only role I didn't like was the goofy father, as that trope is getting old now. This film doesn't take itself seriously, it knows what it is, but it decided to do it as well as possible, and for that I really recommend it if you feel like watching something wholesome and fun that'll lift your spirits.

Watchable but not amazing

This relies on three things; the chemistry between De Niro and Walken, some touching scenes and low brow comedy.

I appreciated the plot was written as if it came from the mind of a territorial preteen, having been one myself in the past. It was straightforward - I expected nothing more from a film directed at families and kids.

Acting was good, as previously mentioned the chemistry between Walken and De Niro really brought this together for me. Just a few let downs, some excusable because they were from the kids. Can't help but feel like Fegley was an annoying actor to watch though.

Soundtrack was basic and pop-ridden. No interest there for me.

5/10. Watchable if you have kids or nothing else lined up to watch.

What a strange day. I was walking the dog, listening to The Gulag Archipelago on Audible, then I got home and watched 'The War With Grandpa' while I cooked. Although it sounds like a Panorama about rogue care-homes, 'The War With Grandpa' is actually a family comedy with some rather legendary veterans in major roles. Robert DeNiro is the eponymous Grandpa, his best-friend is played by Christopher Walken and his daughter is played by Uma Thurman. He even gets Jane Seymour as a love interest! The director of this was responsible for 'Max Keeble's Big Move' which, for some reason, I have seen and shares a very similar style of a young hero in his early teens and his oddball friends. That said, the film really shines for us older viewers when DeNiro and Walken are talking together - seeing Travis Bickle and Max Zorin on screen is always a pleasure. And, while this is not a film I'll remember to my dying day, it's far more palatable than something like 'Dirty Grandpa' so that's a bonus. Harmless, occasionally amusing film with a few nicer sentimental moments about family and loss - really better than I had hoped! There is one scene where I thought a gas-leak in my kitchen was causing me to hallucinate - seeing Jane Seymour, Cheech Marin, DeNiro and Walken bouncing around on trampolines while wearing Lycra is fevered dream of an absolute madman.

COMING SOON: Ruggero Deodato big screen version of 'Mr. Stink'!

Robert de Niro is something different now to what he was in, say Taxi Driver. And come to think of it, who knew that Uma Thurman had such great comic timing. This is an excellent film, something like a live action version of the Simpsons. S'also very funny.

I recommend it.

Silly fun

This is one of those films which shouldn't be any good given the weak plot, but is just a load of silly, chuckle fun! Giggle a minute so long as you take amusement from childish practical jokes as carried out by a grown-up kid v , well, a kid. Bit of a cheesey 'message' about the futility of war, but I guess without this it'd be just a kind of lightweight Jackass. De Niro and Walken just do magic to every film they touch.

unsatisfying
Verified purchase
I absolutely adore Robert De Niro he is so talented. He was hysterically funny in Midnight Run and so terrifyingly convincing in Cape Fear. This film though just let him down a bit and in saying that let the viewer down also. It was on the face of it a gently funny film and in parts very funny but it also felt very lame and unsatisfying. There was humour waiting in the wings that just wasn't brought out and in that way was an opportunity missed because it had such a great cast. The thing is if a film is directed well but the actors aren't brought to their full potential it doesn't matter how many big named stars you throw at it, it will still be a flop - and this was really. I gave this 3 stars because Robert De Niro is always watchable, I just don't think he had enough of a challenge in this. Sorry, if this were a t shirt I'd throw it back in the washer hoping for a better result next time!
