Valley Uprising

8.11 h 38 min201413+
In the shady campgrounds of Yosemite, climbers carved out a counterculture of dumpster-diving and wild parties that clashed with the conservative values of the National Park Service. "Valley Uprising" is the riveting, unforgettable tale of this bold rock climbing tradition: half a century of struggle against the laws of gravity and society. Featuring Alex Honnold with narration by Peter Sarsgaard.

If you're in to climbing, you should watch this documentary

If you aren't in to climbing, you should still watch this documentary

If you're in to climbing and already know a lot about the climbing history of Yosemite -- you should watch this documentary anyway!!

Whilst there are of course many gaps in this documentary, it would be many many hours longer to cover all that have influenced climbing in the U.S across the years, but this focuses on the general history within Yosemite.
It explores the original nature of big wall Yosemite climbing, which in many ways echoed it's culture across the pond to the UK. Climbing's origins were never about money or sponsorship, but a personal or spiritual fulfillment with a slight rebellious anti-system twist! It was the freedom of the experience that pulled like minded individuals to its practice.
This documentary explores those origins and continues past to the modern age of Yosemite rock climbing, including Alex Honnold before the 'Free Solo' documentary that's now a big hit.

Overall if you're interested in some climbing history or just want to see some of the majesty of the Yosemite valley from your living room (not quite the same of course!), give this documentary a watch. You won't be disappointed.

Well-edited with fantastic archive footage and interviews with climbing legends. Found this absolutely fascinating and all I want to do right now is head to Yosemite to see it for myself! Gives you a real insight into climbers' minds and their motivation and shows how the movement has evolved and continues to do so. Really recommend!

This is my favourite climbing film. I climb myself and watch a lot of films about it but this one is so well done and gives a great history of Yosemite climbing.

A great film that transcends climbing alone. The story has a great mix of personalities, cultural references and stunning photography. Yosemite now even higher on the bucket list. Highly recommended.
