5.0 out of 5 starsSuperb - but not a comedy.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2020
An amazing film - original, deep, touching and incredibly well written. But definitely mismarketed as a comedy. I typed in 'comedy' looking for a laugh and found myself unexpectedly touched by the truth and tragedy of these characters.

If you like deep films, appreciate excellent screen-writing, and can stomach some emotional honesty, then you'll LOVE this film. The dialogue is stunning and the acting is some of the best I've EVER seen. The subtlety of the script astounds me and the way the film pulls at you emotionally without any exaggeration of plot or character is just a masterclass in writing.

Like I say, not one to watch if you need a laugh or a lift, but definitely a must-watch if you appreciate grown-up writing, poignant themes and out-of-this-world acting. An unexpected 5 stars from me.

1.0 out of 5 starsMan children and inappropriate relationships excused
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2021
This is not a comedy. Its more of an insight into how society has made inappropriate relationships between older men and young girls, excusable and suggests its ok for men to never actually grow up. At one point it is alluded that the girl is only 13-14yo after the wife finds the husband and girl spooning on the sofa. Desipe the husband acting like a 15yo his wife (despite not being able to have babies) ends up looking like the baddie and has to forgive the man child and shift her life to fit around his.
Defo do not recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly brilliant movie that may as well have been made for me!

This film is most definitely not for everyone and the cover art probably leads the wrong viewers in. However, I love nothing more than watching film without knowing what it is going in. I was expecting a dumb, inept superhero film, and instead got a truly original, deep look at two tragic figures' lives played out at a crossroads where I really had no idea which path the film was going to take.
Superbly written and acted, I loved every minute

4.0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Touching Film - By The End
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 October 2021

This is a quirky film, with somewhat flawed characters and it may provide the ocassional chuckle. I couldn't quite figure out what the main plot was or how the various elements came together but it made sense after a while. Its somewhat touching when Abby opens up to Richard. There is the obvious comic side to it, with the superhero sidekick showing up from time to time but the film isn't really about that as such, its more of an average joe film about average joes. There is something endearing about it though - I like the quirkiness and indeed I can relate to, or otherwise share, the appeal of escaping into your imagination, when things aren't so great in your humdrum environment, as an adult. I like this films subtlety. Yes I would recommend this film to others. Oh and also, I felt the ending was particularly touching but I admit, this film certainly won't appeal to all and it definitely isn't a 'regular' superhero film either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Underrated film

During the Lock down period I've been watching a few films of late, and this came off the back of one actors comments I was watching as a film to check out. They say never judge a book by its cover and for this one this is the case. Even though i like Ryan Reynolds i don't think he should have been the choice for the cover "Unlikely Hero" "Paper Man" The Star of this gem is Emma Stone, if you like "Emma" Emily J Stones work then, this one you have to check out, her acting is this i believe is top notch and playing against the great Jeff Daniels its really good. Both of there characters have issues that they are dealing with in life and there friendship that they find in each other is heart warming.. if your looking at actors at work then this is one is to watch especially for Emma's performance and 5th acting role you can see why later on in her career she gets an Oscar..

5.0 out of 5 stars Really original. Its a thoughtful, quiet film though with funny parts.

I really liked this film and thought it was really original. It has funny parts, sad parts, heart warming parts and a certain painful honesty (with the excellent Lisa Kudrow). I thought it was really well cast and was pleasantly surprised. I can see why some might feel confused or cheated by the advertising poster of Ryan Reynolds, because that is really a side line to the main film which is more serious.

SPOILER ALERT! - Ryan Reynolds is in fact the imaginary friend of a man (Jeff Daniels) struggling with mental health issues. It is more about the marriage of Jeff Daniels character and Lisa Kudrow, how they deal with his mental illness, its toll on their marriage, and what happens over the period of a few weeks when Jeff Daniels' character takes a secluded cabin to try to write his next novel. Enter Emma Stone as a local troubled teen, and the two lost souls help each other and become friends.

Its more suitable for women who are interested in relationships than a comedy, as the poster would suggest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good film but it's not a comedy!

I found myself immersed in the story of the film and after a slowish start I found myself involved in the characters and the story. I would definitely recommend this film. However, if you are watching it because you want a comedy (whether light-hearted, dark etc.) then you do not want to watch this film. There a couple of moments where you have a little chuckle, but beyond that it is most definitely not a comedy. Whoever put 'Hilarious' on the cover, clearly watched a different film. So do not expect to watch a comedy but it is a good film if you're not expecting to watch a comedy.

...if you want a solid character film then this is for you. I loved it. It's either for you or not, but if it is then I hope you get the laugh out loud moments I got against the balance of gentle real moments. Great actors, great film!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the cover art

Whoever said this was hilarious has clearly not even watched the movie. Ryan is not the lead character at all. He is the imaginary friend of lead character Richard (Jeff Daniels) . A writer struggling to come to terms with where his life has lead him. Essentially living away from his doctor wife played by Lisa Kudrow and suffering from writers block which is causing him to have somewhat of a psychotic breakdown. He befriends Amy (Emma Stone), a young girl who is also struggling through traumatic events in her past. The 2 form a bond which helps both say good bye to the parts of themselves that are mentally holding them back. Movie is not a comedy however it is a incredibly endearing story that is perfect for the sensitive at heart. Note the film is also called "Paper Man" in some markets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore The Box Design

As others have pointed out the DVD Box art paints the wrong picture of this movie,You would think it was some whacky Superhero comedy, especially with the misleading word "HILARIOUS" plastered across the bottom of the picture. What You do actually get is a thought provoking tale of a Man obviously on the verge of a mental breakdown who takes a trip to a small town cabin where He intends to re-build His failing writing career.Unfortunately He is accompanied on his journey by His lifelong Imaginary Friend Captain Excellent (The Chap on the Box). This is a Brilliantly acted film that ends on a Great twist.Ignore the box, enjoy the film.

Poster is totally misleading! Definitely not a comedy super hero film. Like another said it feels a bit like Lost In Translation and surprised in the same way how much I liked the ride it took me on. A couple of dissociated people finding help in each other to head back to or make sense of the real world. A lovely pace to the proceedings and a nice little twist I didn't see coming near the end - doh. Ryan Reynolds isn't in it much, but seems to spend a lot of time on his Jim Carrey expressions. Lisa Kudrow did a good job of not letting the side down with her character. Her friends needed slapping though!
