Fifteen years earlier, Una (Mara) ran away with an older man, Ray (Mendelsohn), a crime for which he was arrested and imprisoned. When she comes across a photo of him in a trade magazine, Una tracks him down to his workplace, and her abrupt arrival threatens to destroy Ray's new life, while derailing her precarious stability.

Bad Romance

Based on the play Blackbird by David Harrower, Una takes the name of the film's central character, a woman who decides to confront the man who groomed her for sex when she was a thirteen year old child. He's out of prison and apparently thriving in a new life -until the past quite literally catches-up with him.

It's fairly disturbing subject matter of course, and we're confronted head-on by the damage the relationship inflicted, and continues to inflict, as we follow Una's journey to confront the source of her confusion and pain. Don't expect a clear-cut moral tale however as we explore the possibility the pair's association may have been, on some level, a genuine romance.

On the face of it, we might question the value of a film that explores the grey-areas of statutory rape, one that neglects to outright condemn the mindset of the abuser, and, once we have seen the film, we might pose that question again.

Good storytelling

Difficult subject matter, especially with what has been going in the media recently. Simple movie yet effectively shot with gorgeous performances from two amazingly talented lead actors.

I thought this was good.

A late 20s year old women reflecting on her past experience with an older man that in fact destroyed her childhood and adult life.

Left in confusion she returns to the man, who now leads a normal life in denial of the effects/ consequences of the relationship.

That's my summary.

I have to say I thought this film was excellent in every aspect, I don't feel the need to explain it as the blurb does it for you.
