Undemanding Feelgood Film for the Festive Season
Verified purchase
No, it's not a great film. Not even a particularly good one. The whole thing feels like a TV production made on a rather tight budget (and for all I know that's just what it is). But if you are in need of a bit of fluffy escapism with a feelgood ending around Christmas time this may serve the purpose. The loosely biographical story of the young American painter Thomas Kinkade is rather slow and quiet, it's about family and friendship and community spirit, and it's inspirational (or at least meant to be). It's undemanding, but it may keep you entertained on a long wet winter evening.

The only two names among the cast I was familiar with are Peter O'Toole and Marcia Gay Harden. It's certainly not worth watching this for the sake of Mr O'Toole. His appearance amounts to no more than a couple of short cameos. Marcia Gay Harden has rather more screen time. She is lovely to look at and her performance is solid enough. Other reviewers have remarked on the rather wooden acting and for the most part I cannot disagree. However, I will say that the actor playing young Mr Kinkade is at least very likable.

Not a memorable film, but if you don't expect too much and don't spend too much on the DVD you may enjoy it well enough. Picture and sound quality of the DVD I bought are fine. English subtitles are available for those who may need them.

Heart warming story

This is truly an amazing christmas story. It bring hope, love, joy, community sprit, family heartbreak, an amazing story.
I first bought this movie as I was interested to see how Jared Padalecki acted outside of horror. I already knew he had the ability to do good drama but, wanted to see him in a different light. I was'nt disappointed. For someone so young to play the emotional scenes alongside Peter O'Toole and make it really convincing was amazing. He really is a very talented actor.
Once I had watched it I wanted to watch it again. Everytime I watch I always get something new out of it. It seems fresh each time in so many different ways.
It is based on a true story of a young artist struggling to find a place in the art world where he can make a difference. He has left his home town for the big city in order to do this. As yet nothing has happened. It is on a return journey home with his brother that he find out who he really is and how he can make a difference in not only his life but those around him. He is able through his painting to bring the whole community together and to help them all realise they each have an important part to play in each others lives, even the dogs have a part to play.
Since watching this movie I have looked up the work of Thomas Kinkade and it is truly magical. I would recomend anyone to do this, he brings a whole new meaning to the word LIGHT. I have never seen painting like his before.

I bought this DVD for two reasons; the first because I love the early work of Thomas Kinkade and thought this would be a bit of a biopic of his early life. Secondly, I read the many glowing reviews about how great this film is. Well, I'm sorry to say the film did not live up to either expectation and in my opinion was a complete waste of time and money. The 'story', if you can call it that is nonsense, wrapped up with bad acting, humour that was not remotely funny and a pace which was far too slow. Added to this the dialogue was mumbled in places making it hard to hear what was going on, but to be honest by this time I had lost interest. I wouldn't have given the film any stars if that was an option, but I suppose the cover on the DVD was nice.

Not Good

Sorry if you are one of the people who like this film, but we found it poorly acted, a boring script and we lost interest in it after about 30 minutes. It is based upon the early life of Thomas Kinkade and how his home town celebrated a Christmas. It focuses on TK's relationship with a well known artist who also lives in the same town. This could have been a good film, but poor acting and a poor script left us bored and longing for the film to end.

This film captured my attention and I watched it all the way through. Good story about the late artist Thomas Kincade. Set at Christmas....what's not to like.

If there is one movie you should watch every Christmas it is this one

When I purchased this movie I was expecting a light-hearted feel good Christmas story along the lines of a romantic-comedy but what I got was so much more. Based on true events this is actually a masterfully acted, touching and moving, drama and tragedy that had my whole family in tears. Forget about "It is a wonderful life" if there is one movie you should watch every Christmas it is this one. Its exploration of family, community and growing old, reminds you of what is really important in life and how you should appreciate, your family, what you have and those that inspire you.

not a Christmas movie really, more about the artist. I would have given it more stars if the sound had been better, it was very muted making it a strain at times to follow, I have excellent hearing but my husband does not and the movie was lost on him. Interesting based on real life which I really liked, but a disappointment on the whole not Christmassy and poor quality
