For a film I didn't really expect to like this is really rather good

To be honest I have always been impressed by Robert De Niro. I have really liked quite a few Ellen Barkin films. However, Leonardo DiCaprio has always seemed an acquired taste and I've never sort out a film just because he was in it. I have always also thought that a film about a child growing up with a bullying step-father would be a bit overwrought and not for me. However, the director manages to keep the melodramatic moments from being too saccharine and the performances of the three stars above is are simply brilliant. This trio make what is really a average and partly predictable (not that its bad or worthless) story worth watching every minute they are on screen. The chemistry between Barkin and DiCaprio at the beginning is profound, poignant and funny. Then De Niro enters the mix.

A film I wish I had gotten over my prejudices about eand watched earlier however watching in April 2020 the film made in 1993 about 1957 has not aged in any way.

Good film, but poor picture, heavily cropped

1 star for the heavily cropped picture in this Prime presentation. I bought this to replace a DVD that had gone wrong. The DVD (and original film) is in 2.3 :1. The Prime presentation is in 16:9. This ruins the whole look of the film. Shame, because it looks great in the original.

Better to try and find a decent DVD or Bu-ray of this film (though currently it seems out of print in UK).

(By the way, it's a good film with great acting. 4-stars.)

What a brilliant film!!

I loved this film! De Caprio is brilliant even at this younger age. De Niro of course is epic, so is leading lady. Next I'll read the book by Tobias, bet its better than the film, books usually are. But the film I'm also going to buy, as I need to watch this new favourite again and again.

amazing acting by the star, Leonardo, and by Robert De Niro and Ellen Barkin. Gives hope that whatever your background you can 'reach through the flames' and do what you need to do.

The film is made in 1993 not 1984. Great film though, easily 5 stars.
