More dramatic than funny
Verified purchase
Dramatic but a bit too fraught to be funny. Although there are solid performances from the incomparable Emily Blunt and always awesome Amy Adams, you really need to be in the right frame of mind to watch a film about people who clean up blood and such from crime scenes.
Diverting enough but I don't think I'm in the right frame of mind for it.

Too much syrup on the pancake
Verified purchase
It isn't the fault of the excellent cast that this fails to satisfy.

Emily Blunt is particularly good as Norah, one of two sisters down on their luck, in dead end jobs, while Rose (Amy Adams) is a single mother. Their father has a string of get-rich-quick schemes which are supposed to be amusing but are actually peculiar and embarrassing. Meanwhile Rose takes her troubled son out of school but her plans for him go no further than dumping him with said peculiar father.
When the girls start, then finish, being Sunshine Cleaners, mopping up gory crime scenes, I was hoping for a nice resolution to all their problem scenarios, but that doesn't really happen. There is far too much concentration on mawkish sentimentality, contrived situations to wring the last drop of emotion out ("sad" "cute" "funny") and I felt so manipulated I dug my heels in and refused to care about any of them by the end. Perhaps Americans prefer more syrup heaped on their pancakes than the British.

Real Feel Good Film

I loved this movie. The cast were brilliant and let's face it had Alan Arkin so what's not to like. I would have liked to know if anything developed between Rose and Winston though. I thought they made a lovely couple.
This film held me from beginning to end. Sometimes I didn't know whether to laugh or cry or both.

Warts and all

This is such a great film. It has the same feel as that of 'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'Juno', for example. Hollywood doesn't go in for many 'character' driven films, it's usually big blockbusters with big names and even bigger special effects, so it makes a change to find a movie coming out of Hollywood that concentrates more on the storyline and the characters that drive it, than showcasing Hollywood itself.

Emily Blunt, Amy Adams and Alan Arkin are brilliant. This film is honest, quirky and darkly humourous, with not a drop of sickly sweet sentmentality in sight. It pulls the heart strings because of its ability to show us who we are....warts and all.

An excellent film that should be in your collection.
