A stand-alone film like its predecessor...

This film was released the same time that many high-energy dance films were released like Flashdance, Fame, Footloose and at a time when Olivia Newton-John reminded us all to get 'Physical'.

It did seem a little unusual to have Sly Stallione directing this sequel, but obviously turned Tony's (Travolta) love of dance in Saturday Night Fever into an all muscle, macho, sweaty contemporary dance figure, trying to hit the big time from Brooklyn to Broadway.

The basis of this storyline is whilst Tony is still hungry for a leading role, whilst participating in a new and exciting contemporary dance show on Broadway, he is torn between the two loves (Rhodes and Hughes) of his life that holds him back from hitting the big time.

There was something missing in this sequel to Saturday Night Fever...sure it featured some songs of The Bee Gees and many other artists, but more importantly, Staying Alive failed to connect to its original film roots like the interaction of all his family/friends, the fact that they were all busy living their mundane lives, whilst holding back his dreams. Was anyone curious as to what happened to his brother after he quit his priesthood or even Stephanie, his dance partner attraction?

Sure, John Badham's Saturday Night Fever was an over night sensation, but I still felt somewhat lost towards that ending as if the film was cut short and we were all left thirsty for more, wondering what happened between Tony and Stephanie?

I guess I was looking for answers in this sequel..

Like its predecessor, I came to accept that Staying Alive is very much a stand alone film and it does somewhat well on its own merit - a high-energy crazed film featuring Travolta, Rhodes and Hughes at their finest in this physical 'heaven and hell' contemporary dance moves, which makes up for its lack of storyline.

Tony Manero ( Travolta ) is no longer living in Brooklyn and is now living in Manhattan, where he is struggling to make it as a Broadway dancer while dating sweet fellow dancer Jackie (Cynthia Rhodes). Temptation arises in the form of conniving & beautiful Broadway star Laura (Finola Hughes), who seduces Tony and toys with his affections, whilst also getting him a role as a backup dancer in her upcoming show “Satan’s Alley.”
Critically mauled upon its release, this a fantastic and dazzling film full of brilliant dance numbers and great performances from all three main leads.
Each to his own, but I love this film.

This film is a true favourite of mine, well done sylvester stallone for making this, I prefer this much more than Saturday night fever. I'm really glad I now have this on dvd. Received with many thanks, speedy delivery considering where its dispatched from, fantastic service thank you. 🙏🏾

the good points end there

It is an interesting concept - a dance sequel to Saturday Night Fever directed by Sylvester Stallone. Unfortunately, the good points end there. Not a patch on the original. The dancing is much worse. The story is not that interesting. Good ending, though.
