Passable, but a vapid attempt at a teen-audience (or the direcor put politics over theme/franchise)
Verified purchase
Prettier than "Invasion" but a lot less going on.

Gawking/raw/useless recruits end up stuck in the middle of an infestation with Rico (casper doing the voice and all), until they inevitably get separated and Rico goes on a spirit-journey (yes, really).
Meanwhile while not-hermione (sadly the invocation is relevant due to the character design, perfect-smarts and initial-attitude) dumbs down the setting's politics to "leadership is a populaity contest, rather than focus on the war-setting where humanity is at risk of becoming extinct".

Plot is workable through pre simplicity (if not for the terrible script)
Effects are good enough
Pacing is terrible
Cast/characters are trash-teir (not-hermione, the incompetant, make-up-gawking-trooper-girl and bug-bait are all I have any memory of outside of the familiar 3)

The one thing it has going for it are the few but well made combat scenes (and the explosions).

Plot outline
(former general) Rico is training raw/idiotic recruits (typical cartoon super-team pre-awakening), it's not going well.
Sky-marshal not-Hermione is playing popular-girl with approval ratings (gods know why, it's a military figurehead rank not a specifically voted position)
Carmen Ibanez is in the middle of a mass-offensive against several bug-planets
Carl is pretending to be professor X
Mars is thinking of lestening supporting the bug-war and a bid for independance

The rest is obvious, it ends in a convenient explosion, a hardened squad of troopers and requisite scooby-moment.

A couple of fun action scenes can't make up for the rest of this films downfalls.

I'm a huge fan of the original Starship Troopers film as well as the Robert Heinlein novel it's based upon. The further away from these we get though, my hope dwindles there will ever be another good entry into the series. Traitor of Mars is the fifth film in the series and the second CGI movie being a sequel to the dreadful Starship Troopers: Invasion and it's equally unpalatable.

In a sale at £2.50 I still feel let down by my purchase.

The story focuses on original film's Johnny Rico. He has been stationed on Mars, which is portrayed as a farming backwater where nothing happens. Rico is in charge of a group of fresh faced green marines who are pretty useless. Through a, hilariously awful plot device I won't spoil, Mars is overrun by the bugs with only Rico and this small group of green marines to fight back to stop Mar's destruction.

Oh god where to begin? Well I suppose the animation is passable, certainly an improvement on ST: Invasion. It came out in 2017 though so by that timeline's standards it's still obviously pretty budget and none of the lip syncing was changed for the English release which at times is hilariously bad. Like watching a 70's martial arts dub.

Some of the action scenes are ok, though inconsistent. A scene with hundreds of bugs one minute then they are all dead with like 10 corpses the next. It was pretty nifty to have the jet packs from the original book make an inclusion for the troopers though.

Probably the biggest draw to the film is the return of Casper van Dien and Dina Meyers reprising their roles as Johnny Rico and Dizzy and their performances are...ok? Certainly better than whoever they got to replace Carl who was laughably unbearable. The rookie troopers are a mixed bag voice acting wise but their biggest issue for me is their exaggerated animations to show what rookies they are and it's cringe worthy. They also don't seem that phased their families and home is being overrun by the bugs which seemed like an odd omission. The whole cast is forgettable and Dizzy's entire presence in the film is extremely stupid.

All in all, I wouldn't bother. Just re-watch Paul Verhoeven's 1997 classic.

+ Visuals are passable if not great.
+ Some passable action and Trooper jet packs.

- Lip Synching isn't even close.
- Story is awful.
- Voice acting is a mix of quality. Carl is especially bad.
- Characters are completely forgettable.

Good film

Great CGI film. A good addition to the Starship Troopers series of films. I find the CGI films better than some of the real life action films. Don't expect too much of a story line it's all about how many bugs can get killed - but it is really enjoyable. Casper Van Dien continues in the role of Johnny Rico. Here's hoping for more to come!!!

Return to original Heinlein's book description of starship mobile infantry
Verified purchase
In the Traitor, I have enjoyed that battle techniques are very close to original Heinlein's book description of starship mobile infantry. In the previous movies, the mobile infantry was very immobile, here has full strength. The plot is certainly cliché, something like few good guys against really bad politicians, but it is told with a lot of funny ideas and by nice CGI graphic scenes.
If you want the bulletproof storyline, this movie will disappoint you. If you look for a funny plot for sci-fi fans of Heinlein, you should see the title.

don't read the extra long reviews

I enjoyed this film for what it was just a CGI film for kids. the long drawn out reviews seem to be people who have too much time on their hands, so watch it and judge for yourself and maybe don't think too hard lol

A decent effort to expand the franchise.

An entertaining CGI anime set in Neumeier/Verhoven's adaptation of the starship troopers. It is a fairly decent effort to continue and expand the franchise by puting the characters in new adventures. Finally we get to see powersuit armor.
