4.0 out of 5 stars Fit and Build Quality
By MikeV on 25 April 2019
I bought the brown version, the sellers product picture is a bit lighter than in reality as it's a digital image of a patterned material so shows a bit on the light and rather grey side - it's actually a nice brown "tweedy" material with a black herringbone pattern. The lining is a caramel satin type material with a thinly shaded diagonal line pattern throughout. Overall a nice colour complement. I would estimate that the grey will likely be similar, maybe slightly darker than the image shown, but that's just a guess on my part so don't take it as Gospel :-)

I'd put this set in the "smart suit" bracket of kilt jackets, so you could wear this to a golf dinner, wedding, family do etc as daywear or dressed up a bit for evening wear with a bow tie. I've added this to my collection of kit as my smart daywear option and I'm well pleased.

Things to note - the tweed material is not without imperfections. Not critical as they're very minor and not really noticeable unless you go looking, but for me the product is quite good enough and the price makes this a spot on purchase. The weaving process is probably the reason for the minor blebs as it looks to maybe have been done on an older loom that's a bit rattly. The actual build quality of both jacket and waistcoat seems to be reasonably ok thus far with stitching that feels tight and hasn't just pulled apart when I've tested it (note: see self-inflicted damage during field testing, below).

There are no care instructions - I'm yet to take it anywhere for a clean, but I will try the local dry-cleaners and ask them to test with both Trichloroethylene (TCE)/Perchloroethylene (PERC) chlorinated solvents and whatever alternative they have on an inconspicuous bit of both the tweed and the lining. I don't think I'd like to try washing it in the family Zanussi...

Sizing - I'm comfortably a 48" Regular. Most UK versions of this size fit fine (M&S being a good example for anyone who needs a yard stick). I read various reports and advisories from previous purchasers myself before spending my £75-ish-plus-delivery and a couple of them said to go up a size. Given the closeness of the wedding date and my urgent need, I really didn't fancy spending £275 and up on one from a tailor in Glasgow or Edinburgh with a 6 week minimum waiting list. So I duly went for a 50" Reg and took a punt on maybe having to have some alterations downwards. Not necessary. Go up a size on your normal UK measurement but go with your normal fitting, just make sure you add a comment about your preferred fitting (Short, Regular, Long) when ordering and wait for an email response acknowledging your preference. Took about 3 weeks for the finished article to arrive, nicely packaged, clean and ready to go.

Performance during active operations in the field (pretty much literally for some of it) - I wore mine to a partially outdoor family wedding over Easter during one of the hottest days of the year in the UK and I was quite comfortable in it. SELF INFLICTED INJURY - I merrily chucked the jacket over chairs, tables and assorted desserts and I only managed to pull off one button while ragging my wallet in and out of a pocket - button fine, material fine with no tears, wife annoyed at extra work to fix whiny husbands clumsiness.

Would I recommend? Yes. Colour? Brown one for me because it goes with some beautiful chestnut red/brown leather accessories in the belt, sporran and shoe department which were handmade by an artist and jeweller in Scotland at hideously worthwhile expense, topped off with a simple rosewood handled sgian dubh made by a master cutler in Sheffield. Yep, looked the dogs dangly bits and the wife was fairly chuffed to be seen out with me in public and in front of family. She has formally given the Household Management Nod of Approval to the jacket and weskit, so I can't have been fooling myself entirely.

I'm happy with it, think most others would be too.
