Firstly, a quick review of the movie followed by a slightly more in-depth review of the Blu-ray itself.

I've always been a fan of boxing movies and I know they usually adhere to the same tropes; boxer is successful/tastes success, something tragic happens then comes back stronger, or underdog upsets the odds etc. Rocky did it, Cinderella Man and Ali did it (although the latter two movies are true stories). It's a tried and tested formula.

As a boxing fan, and admirer of those brave enough and selfless enough to get in the ring to risk their lives for fame, money, glory and/or the betterment of their own or their loved one's lives, these tropes hold an echo/reflection of truth to many a famous (and not so famous) boxer's life story.

Southpaw's plot is by no means breaking any new ground in the world of boxing movies, however it is well done. The acting is extremely solid, cinematography is great, and the fight choreography is absolutely superb. Character development is pretty decent, and I definitely found myself caring about Jake Gyllenhaal's Billy Hope, however what I felt was particularly strong was the development of his relationship with his daughter (the young actress was especially good). I will say no more to avoid spoilers.

The Blu-ray transfer was lovely, details are sharp and precise with crisp and vibrant colours, although some scenes looked cold I feel this was a deliberate choice when you take the circumstances of those scenes into consideration. The sound quality was robust and impressive through my Yamaha YAS-105 sound bar, I suspect it would be even more impressive if I had a sound system that took full advantage of the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack.

Extras were sparse which is a shame, but that's par for the course nowadays with physical formats.

I paid just over £4 for this Blu-ray, I was going to rent it digitally but at that price I decided to impulse buy it and with Amazon Prime providing next day delivery it was an absolute steal. Well worth a punt if you enjoy boxing movies and/or Jake Gyllenhaal.

Boxing-Champion 'Billy Hope' (Jake Gyllenhaal) has 43 victories and no defeats behind him, his life seems to be perfect
both inside and outside the 'ring'
At home he has a loving Wife 'Maureen' (Rachel McAdams) and adoring Daughter 'Leila' (Onna Laurence) they have a
lavish life-style as a result of his success in the 'ring'
After a celebration reception 'Billy' gets into a brawl with wannabe Champion 'Miguel Escobar' (Miguel Gomez) during
which disaster strikes following which 'Billy's' life begins to fall apart.
When returning to the ring he has no fight in time his actions when the fight is stopped leads to a 12 month suspension,
no money coming in, he stands to lose everything.
His Manager and best friend 'Jordan Mains' (50 Cent) walks away.....when it seems there us no way back 'Billy' turns to
former fighter and now back-street trainer 'Tick Wills' (Forest Whitaker) in the hope of putting his life back together for
both himself and Daughter 'Leila''ll be a long haul.
This is a gritty and no-nonsense movie which is frequently graphically/brutally violent, however there is a tender and
indeed moving side to the story as 'Billy' try's to win back the trust of those that love him.
'Jake Gyllenhaal' is outstanding in the role of 'Billy Hope' along with great support from 'Forest Whitaker' as 'Tick Wills'
A spellbinding film, not one to miss.....

A few of my friends said this is a great film and I love boxing, so thought it would be a really good few hours. It's not that it's a bad film, but with the hype I've heard about it, it's average.

Southpaw, I went all the way through the film thinking, why is it called Southpaw? Poor title for very little Soutpaw content. Unimpressed.

Was expecting more from this film. The plot is totally obvious so you know what's going to happen from the start. Rachel Mcadams not believable, though only in it a few minutes, as someone grown up in the system. Jake Gyllenhall gives as always a great performance. The fight scenes were very good and I might have shouted out loud for him to win at the screen !! But this is no Raging Bull which is a fantastic film.

Shades of the Rocky films, but much darker in places. The writer seems to be a fan of the genre and it comes across through this movie.

I don't think that there will be a sequel, but it is a good standalone movie. Its no million dollar baby, but its better than a lot of boxing movies. I'm not even talking about lesser watched films like against the ropes or play it to the bone, which I actually enjoyed.

I would put this movie on par with a couple of the Rocky movies.

People are gonna do like, super long videos and write super long reviews, it's a boxing film. A guy boxes, he's good at it, bad stuff happens that he has to overcome. It has a few nice moments, it's actually got a really healthy relationship between a man and his daughter, not something you see often in American cinema, so that's neat. If you wanna watch a road back to redepmtion this film is pretty good. It's no cinderella man but it's good!

I am more than happy to say that this is one of the best boxing films I have seen. Yet this is more than a boxing film, it had a tragic story which was acted out wonderfully by the main protagonist Jake Gyllenhaal, he really went up in my estimations and I was captivated by his performance. The film to me was surprisingly poignant and cathartic and I wasn't expecting myself to be so engrossed in the story.

All in all the acting was excellent, the fight scenes were excellent, the plot was original and the story moved me so much that I honestly felt the pain of Billy Hope during his time or tragedy and mourning. I honestly can't speak of this film highly enough.

I personally am always very weary about buying films and the reason for this is that I struggle with concentration and tend to fall asleep quite alot if I am bored so if I'm watching a film that isn't interesting I never get to the end of it..... I can honestly say I never got bored I was stuck to the tv its such a heart wrenching epic film quite possibly one of the best films I have seen its a classic theme where the lead actor is at the top of his game and its all about his struggle to get his life back and I will not lie this was an awesome film and it honestly made me have tears in my eyes its so thought provoking just really makes you feel for him.
