Super-smart psychological thriller

Full marks to the writer for the cleverest thriller plot I've seen in a film for a long time. No big heist, protracted torture scenes or exaggerated action, but plenty of tension and mystery. One shocking scene that is delivered in a subdued tone that makes it all the more disturbing.

Most of all, this is a mystery and a thriller, and the mystery is so deep that at one point the film does labour through the unravelling of the strands but wow, it's worth it. Such an intelligent movie that delivers its punches and twists with subtlety and style. Recommended to thriller lovers, aspiring writers and all who work with psycho-active drugs!

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the film follows a young woman (Rooney Mara) whose world unravels when she is prescribed a drug by her psychiatrist (Jude Law) which has unexpected side effects. I’ve seen several Soderbergh films now, they’ve all been solid and good watches, but never great (aside from Out Of Sight) and Side Effects is another instance of that.

The performances are very good here. Rooney Mara is a broken, confused and anxious character and she is very good at conveying these different emotions as her her symptoms worsen and when taking the drug. Jude Law is also great as her Psychiatrist who is trying to balance his home and work life, both of these 2 characters get a lot of development and time focused on them which makes them engaging to watch. Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones are also good but they don’t really have too much development (especially the former).

The film is well shot and directed, the pacing is consistent and the plot twists and turns with some unexpected reveals (which I won’t spoil). However it never really goes above that. The performances and technical aspects are good, however there are slow and uniteresting dialogue scenes at points and as unexpected as the reveal was, it does have a convoluted final act.

It’s a good solid watch that is worth checking out especially if you like mystery’s and thrillers, however you probably won’t rush to watch it again.

Good idea, execution a bit problematic..

I liked the idea of the story and Mara Rooney is incredible, however a couple of things do not add up. A couple of unnecessary takes intend to fool the audience. I think the director should have found a better way to present the story but seems that he was lacking of ideas. Interesting to watch, keeps you till the end but the feeling is a bit unpleasant..

Brilliant, fantastic plot, excellent script, brilliant acting. Interesting from the outset, but suddenly, this movie turns out to be completely amazing, I almost always have an inkling of the rest of a plot, well not here. REALLY CLEVER. Brilliant acting, I was fascinated by this. REALLY FANTASTICALLY put together - very polished parts - and I mean this whole movie was brilliant, and all its parts were BRILLIANT!!!!!

Exceptional film

It takes quite a lot for me to thoroughly enjoy films as many are samey predictable or far fetched. With big A list actors and mediocre scripts. This film was on the contrary. The cast was convincing, so much so I thought it was just a straight forward, run-of-the mill film documenting mental health issue, blah..blah..blah. I was rather surprised as the twists and turns gradually unfolded a story line that was not confusing, over scripted and typically cliché Hollywood .The ending was exhilarating and un-predictable. A great watch!!!

I liked this movie

Got up too early and watched this while hubby got ready for work. I thought it was interesting enough to keep me engaged in the storyline, no fast-forwarding required.
Rooney Mara gave a pretty nuanced performance, as did Zeta-Jones. Reminds of the movie 'Awake', but I preferred this, its a lot more subtle.

First up , the main stars are Jude Law and Rooney Mara , Catherina Zeta-Jones , has the primary support role . Make no bones about it , the two
leads , control and propel this film . I found the film difficult to fault , if anything , the subject matters in question , require thoughtfulness and intelligence . Make no mistake , this is a vastly superior thriller .
