The film is gripping throughout with an incredible story and brilliant actors. In particular, the lead actor, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, does an excellent job at portraying a man at different stages of his life as he transforms into a new man and new way of life. The character (Jacob Harlan, or 'Money') is sympathetic and fascinating, and the world he's thrust into is fascinating too. For the most part, Harlan keeps his thoughts to himself so you're not sure exactly how he's feeling or what his motives are until the end, when everything becomes clear. The film is structured such that it shows the present day, while at the same time entwined with this we see flashbacks of the last ten years of Harlan's life i.e. which lead up to the present day. The film handles this juxtaposition in a very accomplished manner. The flashbacks are critical to showing Harlan's journey, revealing information always at the right time and in a fascinating way, and is never confusing. It's a truly great film and I have watched it multiple times, which is unusual for me.

Awesome movie. Finally a movie that shows a white guy getting screwed by the system. Too often movies like this show white people as brainless neo nazies while all other races are the poor suppressed people who didn't really deserve to be there in the first place. This gives you a brutal look at what prison is like where nobody comes out as they where when they went in. Victem or warrior but you will never be the same again.

Well worth your time and money.Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a happily married man who's life turns into a nightmare when he accidently kills his friend in a car crash. He is sent to prison ,where the system is corrupt and joining a gang for protection is about survival. However once you join ,they own you ,for life. Its a good insight into Prison life and how good men can be turned into someone they dont want to be.

here we were on a yawn fest night and browsing an action movie. We landed on Shot Caller with an implausible plot, sounded boring and terribly nice, thankfully it turned out to be the exact opposite. The corrupting influences seemed more than possible and the characters were utterly unlikable as in real life and you did so enjoy their collective "comeuppence!".Blood flows and noes crunch and teeth shatter and you always expect the worse and then it much worse.A rip roaring blood fest ,ENJOY!

Exceptional movie made by people I had previously never heard of. This became available at the same time as the insanely dreadful Brawl In Cell Block 99 and is another prison movie. Thankfully, that's all they have in common.
Deep, thoughtful and understated, this is far too good, white and masculine to succeed at the Oscars. A similar film in the seventies might have swept the board though.

An excellent film in the Breaking Bad/A Prophet vein

Was pleasantly surprised with this film so don't be put off by the slightly cheesy film title - gripping, well paced, excellent performances (particularly by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) whose central character is someone you can empathise with as he forced to make some difficult choices in his life. Highly recommended.

I watched it as I’d already committed 30 mins of my time to this film. It’s definitely watchable and has some good moments. However, certain parts of the script/story feel rushed and lacking. It wouldn’t get anywhere near my top 500 films, but its entertaining enough. A generous three stars.
