A masterpiece that's essential festive viewing

Love it :) Hadn't seen it since I was a kid, and it is as good as I remember (which isn't always the case...). A real Christmas classic. A fine array of supporting actors alongside Finney's masterful Scrooge. Some reviews are negative about the musical scores but I think they're excellent and really bring this Christmas tale to life. Will be added to my list of films to watch each year to get me in the Christmas spirit and banish any lingering humbug. The picture and sound quality is excellent, much better than I expected (or remembered from having it watched it repeatedly on VHS many Christmases ago). Merry Christmas guvnor....

My favourite Christmas film.
My Mum took me to see this film on the cinema when I was a nipper, and I loved it then and ever since.
I love Alastair Sim, and I thought George C. Scott did a fair job in the role, but Albert Finney is THE Scrooge for me.
Yes, it is a musical, but the songs are terrific, and even the non-singers in the cast are passable. I am not a lover of musicals per se, but I challenge anyone not to sing or hum along to "thank you very much".
I dread to think how many times I have watched this film - and certainly not only at Christmas - but it makes little difference, as I enjoy it each and every time.
It is just a marvellous film, and the cast does a super job in their respective roles.
If you wish to see the best short story ever written transposed to the screen and turned into a musical, the look no further.

Bought as a replacement to a copy I had had for many many years. Our most favourite Christmas film and was obviously worn out in the end by endless Christmas watching. Such a feel good Christmas film and follows Dickens novel very well with such lovely songs and a real Christmassy feel. The cast are superb and I do not hesitate in recommending this wonderful film. Hope this new copy lasts many more years.

THE Definitive Christmas Dickens - You Must Watch This film - It's a Masterpiece & The Very Essence Of Yuletide hope & Joy!
Verified purchase
Just possibly the most definitive Christmas Carol ever filmed. It's equipped with every seasonal whistle and bell; every heart-warming moment and time of despair; every hope and dream, every lean and abundant joy; and every harsh, redemptive and forgiving sentiment that the Yuletide season can bring. Although the film contains music, this in no way detracts from a fabulous script; rather it greatly (and seasonally) enhances it, as the music is used wisely, timely and appropriately - it lifts or alters the mood in keeping with the heartbeat of the story. The genius of Albert Finney, wonderful characterisation from all actors and actresses concerned, an expert direction and rich film-sets, make it a must-see for every generation - it certainly has been for my family ever since my own children were quite young. We all continue to be absorbed for a couple of hours each December, every year, without fail. I cannot praise this masterpiece highly enough. Dickens would surely have wholeheartedly approved.

Fantastic Christmas film

Fantastic Christmas film. Bought this as my original BD was lost in a move of house. It never fails to deliver each Christmas - gives you that lovely warm feeling ("The chancellor's cat is an angry cat!"...). Superb cast who know how to act, super photography, good sharp picture on this blu ray, and beautifully directed. A great British production from the beginning of the 70s. Albert Finney plays the title character as if he was born for it - pity he seems so reclusive as it'd be good to see him around more. The Amazon price was a steal, so full marks all round.

Brilliant film. Unfortunately this DVD faulty, would not play. On examination of DVD surface, no damage apparent. Not a fault with the DVD TV player, as playing other DVD’s. Amazon immediately approved the reason for return and offering a full refund. Refund in progress at present.
A shame, excellent film, a classic, and of the season.

Even if you don't like musicals you will love this film!

This is, as other reviewers have mentioned, the greatest Christmas film ever and it looks beautiful on Blu Ray.

A really wonderful rendition of the well known story, it really is a treat that the whole family will enjoy. The story itself really benefits from the songs which are all catchy, some fun, some sad, some romantic, but all wonderful. They are only songs - this is not one of those musicals where every line is sung; there is plenty of standard dialogue between the numbers.

A great British cast led superbly by Albert Finney with a nice turn from Alec Guinness.

My family are not massive musical fans but we absolutely adore this movie and it has become something of a Christmas tradition to watch it which we all look forward to.

If you have never seen this film I really do envy you - it is such a delight to discover for the first time.

Its the traditional Christmas tale.

I choose this version of Scrooge because I wanted to introduce my 9 year old granddaughter to the story of Scrooge. I always watch a Scrooge film every year as its part of my Christmas preparations.
This version is excellent. We also both enjoyed the music and she found the ghost of Future Christmas scary!! She enjoyed the film very much even though it came out in the 1970's
