Dreadful film

If you're looking for a slam-bang Indiana Jones style piece of family entertainment, give this a miss. Awful music (wailing guitar solos totally out of keeping with the visuals); leaden script that echoes as it hits the ground; actors bored with their own performance, and the whole thing generally aimed at 13 yr-olds.

I wasn't expecting Tolstoy here. I like Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mummy, even High Road to China with Tom Selleck (which gets universally panned) but this one was so appalling we managed 15 minutes, then switched it off and watched Escape to the Country instead (young couple from Pinner seeking a better life in Shropshire with their two cats. Much more entertaining).

"You do throw like a girl!" [Dirk]

This 2005 action adventure movie features Dirk Pitt [Matthew McConaughey] and Al Giordino [Steve Zahn] as a pair of treasure seekers currently trying to find the location of an American Civil war river boat. Acting on new information they head to Africa where they soon encounter Dr. Eva Rojas [Penélope Cruz] who reluctantly joins their upriver excursion.
This action packed movie has a great opening scene as the ship escapes the war before jumping to modern times. The search involves them in civil wars, plagues, roaming bandits, dodgy dealings, damsels in distress and an unforgiving environment. Youngsters will enjoy the action but adults may dislike the unrealistic plot but if you liked films such as `King Solomons Mines', `Jewel in the Crown' or `Romancing the Stone', or even the `Librarian' series then this should be right up your street.
This 12 rated disc has no special features other than normal play, scene selection and subtitles [with hard of hearing selection] but the action is `adventurous' and comic rather than gore and is a good family movie deserving of *****.

A lightweight action romp, very much in the vein of Raiders of The Lost Ark (or Tomb Raider, but with MatthewM instead of Angelina Jolie). It's probably better than the later films in the Mummy series; certainly as enjoyable.
Lots of frothy banter, unlikely escapades, and a bit of James Bond supervillany thrown in for good measure.
Largely wastes McConaughey's and Cruz's acting talents, but it's fun to see the likes of Delroy Lindo, William H Macy and Patrick Malahide getting some screen times, even in tiny roles in an obscure box-office flop.

Better than critical response may lead you to believe.

First things first, if people are expecting it to be exactly the same as the book they'll be disappointed. That said, it's a solid action adventure with some casting choices that are close to Cussler's characterizations. Could have been a good franchise starter but the problems the producers had getting the script accepted put paid to that.

The film is nonsense but great fun. No serious violence just old fashioned adventure

I sent for this as I have just read the book. The plot is a bit different from the book, as in the book they were researching the red algae pollution and not looking for the ship. I could not really follow how the ship was in the desert. The film is nonsense but great fun. No serious violence just old fashioned adventure. I would recommend it.

An excellent adventure action film. Definitely worth an up-grade to blu-ray if you only have a regular dvd. Picture fantastic and some good extras.

This film is tedious

there is nothing special about this movie. its the classic tale of an American hero against the bad guys. Of course there is a pretty girl that the hero wins at the end. the hero also has a side kick. its nothing special. the plot is boring. Of course there are the banal explosions and fights. I could not wait for it to end. I'm really bemused at the 4 and half star rating. At most it merits in my view a two.
Enjoy.
