Professional but where is the fire?
Verified purchase
Have seen many versions of Romeo & Juliet in the last 45 years, some have blown me away like Franko Zeffirelli’s 1968 version and others I have found intriguing and original such Baz Luhrmans 1996 film with Clare Danes & Leonardo De Caprio. This version I found sumptuous, with excellent costumes, accurate fight sequences and a great cast, but it felt like something was missing, a spark, a fizz, an air of excitement, of apprehension, of dread or of hope.
We know how it’s going to end but we want the hope that the monk will deliver Juliets message in time. And I think that was what was missing here, that element of hope. There were some excellent performances, particularly Paul Giamatti as the Friar, Stellan Skarsgård as the Prince and Lesley Manville as the nurse. But still the film smoulders and smokes but does not catch fire.

Good but not entirely Shakespeare
Verified purchase
As a movie, this was very enjoyable to watch and the actors are good. However, as a production of Romeo and Juliet the Shakespeare work, it is lacking. A lot of original lines are omitted in favour of made up lines in Shakespearean meter which is off-putting - either use it or don't (just please why mess up the genius that is Shakespeare?) But it does tell the story well and is a movie I would watch again, just as a literature academic I had a few issues.

The saddest interpretation of the most enchanting love story
Verified purchase
The cast and their flat unemotional recital successfully managed to do what I thought was impossible- they completely killed the essence of this undying love story.
I don't remember when I feel that disengaged from what was happening on the screen as well as wishing to switch it off - only when I see advertising, perhaps.

A snippet of a story

Good enough if you enjoy a bit of Shakespeare every now and again but really only enough to tide you over until you have time for something more in-depth.

They KISS - then die, NOT!
Verified purchase
Spoiler Alert: (Seriously, if you don't know the ending you must be from another universe!) Juliet wakes up just as Romeo is dying and they KISS!!!! I threw a fit in the classroom and started shouting at the screen. Was forced to stop the movie and take out the No Fear Shakespeare editions of Rome and Juliet to PROVE to my student's this is NOT how it happens.

If you want an accurate version, you will still have to go with the tried and true 1968 Whiting versions. Sorry everyone, but cock pieces it is!

Not faithful to Shakespeare
Verified purchase
As most others have said, whilst beautifully shot, it is not faithful to the text. The actors are strong but the script is not the original Shakespeare. This is not faithful enough to use with a GCSE class. If you want to watch a loose adaptation of the film then this is good. But it is not like the proper play.

For romantic souls

Sooo beautiful that we watched it for a few times and definitely would watch again. Also, who likes original Shakespeare's poems, won't be disappointed.

Beware, must watch in one sitting
Verified purchase
What we saw of the film was great BUT we didn’t get time to finish in the very short time it is available for. We wanted this mainly for school study, grandson doing this in English. We can watch it free on you tube so wouldn’t bother renting from Amazon again. Even thou I’m a prime customer. Not good value
