Drama and humor

I just watched Reign Over Me. Brilliant movie.

Normally one would think it would not be something for me, because it's a "human drama" story. But it's a good one, it avoids the usual sentimental sand traps most of these movies are mired in.

And importantly, it has a lot of humor. It's subtle, of the kind people may not remember after, but it's there all the time. One small example: a therapist, played by lovely Liv Tyler, is told by a defensive patient that what he thinks about are her perfect tits. And next session she is wearing the bulkiest sweater you ever saw... and it's not even mentioned! That's excellent.

There's a bit of dangeous casting by Adam Sandler as the messed up guy, but he actually does a wonderful job.

One of the main themes of the film is also unique (so far as I know): even if it's obvious that a person needs to Get Help, and Open Up, and Face His Past, how much can you do for him? How much can you push him? Can you really help him? Is it him you really want to help, or youself?

This is a different role for adam sandler than usual but it's still a great performance from him and a great film to watch. Alan johnson ( Don Cheadle ) sees a college friend Charlie Fineman one day ( Sandler ) who lost his whole family in a plane crash, Charlie is a man who doesn't talk to anybody and doesn't let anybody into his life since the crash but Johnson tries his hardest to get into his life but will he? The two men's lives are completely different but could make a perfect friendship, but if they end up with a great friendship it had a lot of ups and downs in the meantime. A problem for Johnson seems to be the closer he gets to charlie though, the further apart he's becoming from his wife. This is an unpredictable, easy to watch, fascinating, enjoyable and loveable film.

Brave to make it so soon after 9/11. Not mawkish, very funny. Sandler is a revelation

A treat

Big fan of Don Cheadle and like many of Adam Sandler's films so gave this a spin. Really glad I did. Deals with a very delicate subject (post 9/11 PTSD) but in a touching and often humorous way which really is a tribute to all involved in makeing the movie. I've never seen Adam Sandler play such a dramatic role before but he does the job well and still manages to incorporate some of his trademark comic style. Don Cheadle is, as always, excellent. A genuinely good watch.

Adam sandler is totally brilliant in this film. A big step away from most of his work and an excellent result.

Adam Sandler' best film, holds some comedy but the realism of a historical event and the portrayal he does of a broken man who has lost everything because of that event is why I believe this is his best film.

a moving story with great moments

'reign over me' is a surprisingly moving narrative that tells of the very different experiences of two men affected by the 9/11 tragedy - one has moved on and buried himself in his work, another has become compulsive about routine and order.
you'll see Adam Sandler in a whole new light after watching this and Don Cheadle, Jada Pinkett, Liv Tyler and Saffron Burrows all have key roles.
an excellent serious movie.
