This is a pretty terrible film

Starts off with some terrible camerawork and gets worse. Close ups, out of focus shots mixed with handheld jerky images and midshots when you needed to be seeing the wide shots. I know it was low budget but use a tripod. I almost stopped watching in first 5mins. Klein (dop) needs to go and watch some films for framing and maybe go back to film school. The script is pretty bad with a rediculous long diatribe by the preacher which goes on an on. I frankly didn't care for any of the characters getting shot or tortured because the script had given me nothing to like them. There needs to be some character development to encourage the viewer to feel something. There was none. Goodman is a great actor and has been in some birlliant low budget films which this obviously is but even he lags. Without him it would have not even got one star. I could go on but I need to go and beat myself with a stick for spending money to watch this utter rubbish. Don't waste your time.

An unexpected and unpredictably dark and violent provocation from Kevin Smith
Verified purchase
A surprisingly violent and striking film by Kevin Smith, no more ironic but critical and nightmarish in his approach to an absurd and excessive story of guns, rednecks and anti-state environment.
Smith leaves irony, a black and dark one, at the end, when the film seems to take another unpredictable direction.
But the good thing about it, is that this is not a torture film like the awful and pointless stuff produced by Eli Roth, but a moral provocation where, getting to end of the story, you do not feel confident you've been supporting the right side....
Smith is also talented in casting Michael Parks and Melissa Leo and giving them lifetime roles

John Goodman nuff said

There are many good actors and actresses in this film (Kerry Bishé for instance) and they all perform admirably but it is Goodman who just makes the film work as the ATF agent caught in the middle.

A very good film by Kevin Smith.

Nice to see John Goodman getting a part with some teeth.. The film it self is average in my opinion. But JG gives it an edge I couldn`t resist.
Takes about 45 min to get going.

New Direction for Kevin Smith

I've always been a great fan of Kevin Smith and his comedies, but I'm also a great fan of horror and thrillers so I was very keen to see this film. Red State is a very good movie with plenty of suspense and twists. It still has the feel of a smith movie with some of the dialogue, but I think someone who dislikes his previous comedies could still enjoy this.

Silent Bob

Superb and very creepy performances, especially from Michael Parks and Melissa Leo. It's not like anything I've ever seen before, it's creepy, tense, action packed, explosive, funny, surprising, shocking . . . it really keeps you guessing as to where the film is heading. A very different film from the guy who brought us Jay and Silent Bob! :o)

This film is such a departure for Kevin Smith and it's a risk that paid off.

This is a film about guns, government, god, the authorities and a bit of promised sex and how all of the above shape people's lives and cause them to do what they do.

Filled with a stellar cast - Michael Parks knocks it out of the park - and a with a strong, witty script, Red State is a film people are bound to love.

Great features on the disc, including an entire set of podcasts Smith did to go with the movie during it's pre-release hype.

Good film.

Something different from Kevin Smith. Nothing like his Viewaskew pictures, but just as unique. There is a reasonable making of, but unfortunately no commentary. Smith usually revels in commentaries so it's a shame not to have it.
