Red Dwarf fans upgrading our series 1-9 basic box set to get our favourite series with the extras!
Verified purchase
We are confirmed Red Dwarfers in this house, but only had the basic 'no frills, no extras' box set before. We'll still keep that for the later series (those which were post series 6 - we didn't enjoy those so much because of the 'tinkering' with the format that started going on in them) but have steadily been replacing series 1-6 with the extras-laded individual boxes.

Without a doubt, the star 'extra' is the cast commentaries - whilst you can tell they have been added on years (and years!) after the original making of the episodes, the cast have clearly had a ball doing them. It sounds, from the comments they make, that they re-watched each six episode box set all in one go themselves, but that adds a curious sense of continuity to them that might otherwise be lacking if they'd been done 'here and there'. You can hear the camaraderie between the cast members as they talk about the behind the scenes stuff they are recalling/talking about - sometimes it's all of them at once, sometimes not, but they still sound very much 'at one' (the main four guys, anyway). Hattie Heyridge just sounds bonkers (and, having seen her one of her live stand-up routines, she is quite bonkers in real life!) and often has a different view point to the others on what happened, why and when! But it all adds to the fun.

There are other extras too - they vary between each DVD set - and you can have fun exploring them, and tracking down the odd Easter Egg too if you're that way inclined!

If you love Red Dwarf, but haven't yet got round to getting the individual series, then you won't be disappointed if you spend a few pounds on each one of them now!

Red Dwarf V

Still going from strength to strength, this series is brilliant. Although not the best episode of the series, one of my favourite scenes is in Holoship when one of the holograms has come aboard and is feeding back to his ship and Lister is taking the smeg, in my opinion it's hilariuos. By far the best episode is Back to Reality, when we first meet Dwayne Dibbley (the cats alter-ego). Special guest star, Timothy Spall, as the technician is absolutely brilliant and, if you play the episode with the cast commentry on, you'll find out he's not actually a Brummie!). The episode is one of the best ever, absolute class.

As ever, the extras are superb and worth the DVD just for the documentries and smeg ups.

Mr. Flibble's very cross...(Red Dwarf Series V: 2-disc DVD)

Call me a Smeghead but I am just getting round to collecting Red Dwarf on DVD (there's no sign of a pointless blu-ray release yet - thank goodness). Six episodes of hilarity plus the disc of brilliant extras and a collector's booklet! I've watched this series from when it was first shown on BBC2 and it is one comedy I love to watch over and over (along with the equally brilliant 'IT Crowd'). In this series there are some great cameo appearances (Jane Horrocks before Ab Fab fame, Don Warrington and Jack Doherty - remember him?). This is just the funniest silliest comedy with likeable characters and special effects that to me are SUPPOSED to look really terrible (although great work went into the model-making) which only adds to the enjoyment of the show.

On the DVD: language - English
subtitles - English SDH
audio - Stereo DD
aspect ratio - 4:3 full screen

plus all the extras that are listed by Amazon above.

The fifth series of Red Dwarf improves upon a still very good fourth series with some great stand out moments including Lister mocking a hologram's examination of Red Dwarf in 'Holoship' and Rimmer catching a holo-virus in 'Quarantine'.

While the fifth series is still no quite in the level of the third series, it is still one of the best series of the entire show and shows just how great the show was for its time.
