Before the Silence... there was Lecter
Verified purchase
This is perhaps the strongest of the Lecter stories and it absolutely galloped along. Kept us gawping for over two hours.
Astonishing performances from Ed Norton, Emily Watson, Ralph Fiennes and Philip Seymour Hoffman; gruff manliness from Harvey Keitel, and some surprisingly subtle moments from Anthony Hopkins himself.
In fact, it was WAY better than I remembered, and even stands up solidly when compared to the gorgeously gruesome TV series which features Mads Mikkelsen and buckets of blood (and which has given me something of a neurosis about deer antlers).
Although it was filmed after the others, this is the FIRST in the Lecter trilogy. So watch this, then 'Silence', and then 'Hannibal'.
Just remember; this film doesn't feature Clarice Starling at all - neither Jodie Foster nor Julianne Moore appear anywhere.

Not about Wales or the Welsh
Verified purchase
Wasn’t a documentary about Wales as expected. I’m welsh and was Looking forward to watching this with a nice cup of tea and some Welsh rarebit, as in the title red Dragon i.e. on the Welsh flag, I was startled when I realised this was some kind of murder film and contained no red dragons whatsoever! This might be okay for people who are not from the valleys like!

Good, but not great

A strong effort all round. Much better than 'Hannibal', but still nowhere as good as 'Silence of the Lambs'. I think even 'Manhunter' is still better too. There are some great performances here: Hopkins is back to form as Lecter after the poor showing in 'Hannibal', and Norton is strong as usual. The script works for the most part, apart from the clichéd end sequence. My biggest beef is with the paper-thin characterisation of The Tooth Fairy. Fiennes does the best he can, but the role is so hammily under-written that no amount of "acting" can save it. Watchable, but hard to recommend.

Good, solid, yet far from Demme's classic

I need to refresh my knowledge of Michael Mann's "Manhunter", yet this remake proves to be vast improvement from overworked "Hannibal" (to say at least). Good performances - most notably from Emily Watson, eclipsing Anthony Hopkins in her role as blind, frail lady, dealing with ego-ridden, shy but deadly dangerous Francis Dollarhyde. We got solid plot, muddled by few bit tedious scenes - like TOO graphic metaphor of Blake's painting being devoured or scene with Dollarhyde and captured by him nosy reporter... "Red Dragon" lacks mostly tension and real drama, based on believable characters audience cares for. Yet, somehow, I liked it, maybe just try not to compare it on and on with "Silence of the lambs" and focus on movie's strong points. As for extras, nothing realy special here, some usual interviews and featurettes - Scott's movie got better treatment from publisher, then. Check it yourself, one shouldn't be too dissapointed.

I'd imagine this film would be much better if you had never watched Manhunter

I'd imagine this film would be much better if you had never watched Manhunter... If you've seen Manhunter you will most likely maintain that is the better film (If not, watch it!). However the slightly different ending took me by surprise and wasn't exactly a bad thing. Overall the film is a good film and as far as "remakes" go, pretty decent and it fits the Hannibal franchise perfectly.
