Arnold Swarzenegger introduced to the world
Verified purchase
Originally a cult 1970s film of and for the bodybuilding community, this modest and niche documentary has attained a life of its own, partly because it launched the career of future superstar Arnold Swarzenegger. It peels the cover off the hitherto strange world of professional and amateur bodybuilders, and made some the protagonists household names. Fascinating and inspiring in equal measure, the fact it is still being viewed today, almost 50 years afterwards, is testament to its enduring appeal, and the massive popularity of gym membership training that it helped to spawn. And of course, it basically chronicles the life of pre-Hollywood and pre-California governer Arnold Swarzenegger.

Inspirational and entertaining

Pumping Iron is a candid look at the art and science of muscle building from a time before muscles were fashionable. The main story follows Arnold's journey to the Mr Olympia, which is bodybuilding's most valued prize. With appearances by Franco Columbo, Lou Ferrigno, Ken Waller, Ed Corney and Mike Katz, we get to see some of bodybuilding's biggest stars of the time training and preparing for competition.

It's mainly Arnold's film though and the charisma that later made him a successful film star and politician is evident even here.

I first watched this back in 1980 and it was partly the inspiration for me to take up weight training at the time. It's hard to imagine now but there was little else available at the time where one could watch professional bodybuilders training, and it's the training sequences that proved most inspirational to most people I spoke to about the film at the time.

The film has a certain 70s charm and should prove entertaining to anyone interested in bodybuilding or the history of Arnold Schwarzenegger. This 'Special Edition' also contains a 2003 interview with Arnold, which is interesting.

The sport of bodybuilding has moved on a lot since then but Pumping Iron stands out as a seminal work on the subject.

Always loved body building to do and watch. My husband is a body builder, so we love watching the same films. Just Shows how much Arnie has come down to earth from those years ago. But, What awesome bodies and you can see from this era, how the body builders have changed in size and muscles. Growth has a big play these days to get bigger and stronger muscles for shows. I don't mind though, at least the challenges are still all to the same goal........ To be the best in the world.

41 years ago and a documentary looking into the intense world of bodybuilding as the lads work on being mr olmpia 1975, its a world of dedication, sacrifice and arrogance and intensity and its a great insight, arnie was going for his 7th title i think and he was as arrogant and brash as you like, its hard to like him at times while at other times you know its the mindset of a winner and thats what he is. Its mindgames like we see in football and all competition really, really interesting indeed

The Defining Moment

This, my friends, is the DVD release of the seminal 'Pumping Iron'; a glimpse into the world of bodybuilding and weightlifting. On the eve of the '75 Mr Olympia, champion Arnold Schwarzenegger and rookie Lou Ferrigno (pre 'The Hulk' tv series) battle for the crown.....

You'll see the highs, the lows, the drama, the laughter....everything in 83 minutes of this independent release.

Being a DVD, of course, there's some extras and interviews with Arnold amongst others.

A fun film and a reminder of my teen years.....

This film speaks for itself. Some of the greatest bodybuilders sharing their journey to winning one of the greatest competitions of all times. These were real bodybuilders and not those like today science projects.

- This is a documentary into the life of bodybuilder and how hard the train, their lifestyle, competitions.
- Bodybuilding has change a lot since the times of Arnold – they did it for the love of the sport, now a days it about the money, movies, you tubing – no one bodybuilder really stands out today – they are all the same.
- You will understand why Arnold is so respected in this sport, is positive attitude, his motivation.
