Very watchable

As live action versions of Collodi’s moralistic story go, this is not as good as Luigi Comencini’s superb 1971 film for RAI (available on Blu-ray in an English edition), but it is still very watchable. Filmed in picturesque Italian landscapes (Geppetto lives in the old hill town of Bagnoregio in Viterbo). Some minor characters are in dubbed English, but the main roles are portrayed by English-speaking actors: Bob Hoskins as Geppetto, Joss Ackland as Ciliegia and twelve-year-old Robbie Kay as Pinocchio (who seems more naïve than mischievous – compare eight-year-old Andrea Balestri for Comencini, whom the director considered ideal).

Needs better special effects.

Great acting and ensoble of famous actors let down by poor special effects. Sad really. I watched it and was slightly bored. I thought it a little slow on storyline and every time I saw the puppet it made me cringe. I can’t explsin or suggest why it’s not up there with the best interpretations but to me it at best ok.

Just awful

The actors in this movie are appallingly bad, it’s only saviour to the movie is the presence of ‎ Bob Hoskins & Thomas Brodie-Sangster, otherwise the movie is a complete farce, don’t waste your money on buying it.
