A beautifully crafted and visually stunning adaptation of a classic.

Having seen this film twice at my local cinema I was delighted to be able to obtain it on disc to enjoy again.

Garrone's adaptation is a real passion project that he had been wanting to complete for many years, and it shows in every frame of the picture. His decision to execute as much as possible of the film using prosthetic makeup rather than CGI brings a luminous, magical quality to the work. The two central performances by Federico Ielapi and Roberto Benigni are faultless and the film is visually stunning.

Garone has returned to a place much closer to Collodi's darker tone in the storytelling, rather than the saccahrine treatment of Disney. Whilst he has still softened the edges of some aspects of the narrative (the story is very grim indeed in its original version) he has maintained the sense of Pinocchio as being quite uncontrollably rebellious rather than merely a bit of a mischief.

The importance of the turquoise fairy is really highlighted in this telling, as is the fact that Pinocchio repeatedly strays from the right path numerous times before finally finding redemption by learning to think for himself and about others. It remains a film that is suitable for children but supervision is necessary, due to some quite violent imagery at times.

The transfer to DVD here is, sadly, rather dark, and many scenes particularly in the earlier parts of the film appear more dimly lit than on the cinema screen (and I am watching on a well adjusted 65" LED screen) but this does not detract appreciably from the viewing experience.

Although the disc contains no additional bonus features, one big bonus is that it contains both the original Italian soundtrack and the English dubbed version (voiced mainly by the original actors) and optional English subtitles, which offers a choice of viewing options. I am glad of this, as my local cinema showed the film in the Italian version with subtitles, and it is nice to be able to view it this way as well as in the dubbed version that was on wider UK release.

This film is a treat for lovers of finely crafted cinema, as well as those who enjoy a classic tale told by a master storyteller.

English Dubbing - not so good!!
Verified purchase
Great film with some variations to the story most of us know, good family entertainment the only thing that lets this film down is the English Dubbing, slightly out most of the time and if, like me, you watch the lips when a character is talking, you can plainly see that the character is still talking when the English voiceover has stopped and that really irritates me!!!! (Hence only getting 4 Stars).

Overall, not bad for the price (it was reduced when I bought it) but I would have been really disappointed had I paid the full price!!

Absolutely dreadful

We bought this film for our daughter. We watched it together as a family. Within minutes we noted it is foreign actors with English over voice. The actors were very amateurish. It bored all of us. Such a let down for an old classic. Don't waste you're money.

A great adaptation of the original 1883 Novel
Verified purchase
This Italian live action version of the original Novel is fantastic.
The acting and visuals and excellent. Plus the music Score is gorgeous. (shame it only available in MP3)
Some moan about the English Dub. It was done by the original Itaian Cast. So it is very good.
The differences to the Disney version are because it's taken from the brilliant 1883 Italian Novel which is much darker than Disney's classic 1940 animated fim.
Also if you buy the DVD it has the choice of watching it on Italian with English Subtitles.
A great version of a classic Novel. Recommended.

this is yet another Disney film ruined by changing the storyline, and pinnochio was NEVER shown hanging by the neck from a tree branch overnight.certainly NOT for young children.i found the hanging scene to be shocking bearing in mind young children will watch this and may get ideas and wrong impressions . definately DO NOT RECOMMEND

Magical and dark

Beautiful, magical, dark film. The fact it was an Italian film with English dubbed didn't bother me at all.

The film has that slightly other-worldly atmosphere that all the best fairy tales have.

Nothing like the original - Awful remake and dubbed
Verified purchase
Positives - buying, delivery and packaging perfect.

Negatives - Everything about the film. The story is nothing like the original version, badly dubbed, acting is terrible, very boring and rather dark for children. Definitely would never recommend this film to anyone. Obviously made on a cheap budget.

Strange and dark adaptation and not suitable for children!

Very strange and dark adaptation of the original. The whole family watched in shock and confusion, before half lost interest and left the room, only to be informed that it didn’t get any better!
Not one for children!
