Hidden gems in the soundtrack.

Show has a good nostalgia value, but main point of interest is the Henry Mancini sound track. Lots of early work in the background of Peter Gunn recognisable of early very stylised work made so famous in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Mancini also did soundtrack for Blake Edwards 1960's Pink Panther films and the cartoon series of same name.
Acting and script for Peter Gunn are low budget and not very credible today, but the series must have been edgy and hard hitting in 1958. It' worth watching a few episodes, but it does get repetitive.

4x3, black & white made in 1958. Tv was not important in a movie world. Stuck in cheap studio sets . So what do you get . Style , That's what. Those who appreciate Bogart , Cagney et.al will love this. . Almost film noir. Blake Edwards produces with some some serious directors ( such as Robert Altman ). It relies on pure acting. The openng episode has a great example of sex without sex. Oh Did I forget? One of the great themes ever written ( by Henry Mancini I. If you don't know it you should - I've even heard it on a video game. In fact the music is one reason this stands out . The modern eye used to to high tech tv may avoid this but give it a chance and you might just be drawn in.

Classic TV Noir
The perfect late night viewing - Dark , Grim . Film noirish . Youll be lucky if you get more than 4 sets per episode each lit by a single tabelamp. . The hero looks like a lawyer and talks like a radio announcer. He give as good as he gets as he glides the shadows with a steely glare and a pack of cigarettes .
It is tv of another age but it works . Each episode is short and compelling. Often violent with bleak endings

if youre an unfortunate character in this series, make sure there is a pot of coffeee on the boil and a gun under your pillow .

A suprisingly good series ( so far ) very watchable and of course a very famous theme song.

Nostalgic
Ok, grew around this period and watched this sort of programme, and loved them, so very nostalgic for me.
However, the story lines are a bit weak - to be fair what can you do in 20 minutes or so - but still they are a little wishy washy. Also the first series lost me around episode 5 which included bull fighting - sorry even in those days animal rights were a big issue for me - doesn't matter the era cruelty is cruelty and I don't think it should be shown as part of any entertainment then, or now. So have given this one the elbow and am moving on to Swallows and Amazons - Amazons forever!!!

Bygone era, but some themes endure.
To get the most out of this you’d have to really appreciate period film noir with its pedestrian pace and cliches. Many modern detective shows echo Gunn’s encounters, but of course things have moved on in terms of pace, content, complexity and characters. It is what it is. Not terrible, but not easy to watch with muffled sound and fuzzy black and white picture all of which is of course expected from 1958. One for fans of the genre.

Top Gunn
About as close as television ever got to film noir. Superb mixture of dramatic action, modern jazz, and a suave cool lead in a sleazy waterfront world. Darker drama in some episodes, lighter humour and parody in others. The first season, in particular, is sublime.
