TIME TO TERMINATE?

Harold Finch's brainchild has been damaged. Will The Machine ever again function - pinpointing people either about to cause grief or to become victims, Reese and Ruth sent out to avert catastrophe?

This final season is more than a thriller, despite what some may consider an excess of shooting. (Early on it is revealed Reese has already killed sixty-two people. He is going to add considerably to that total.)

Arguably far more interesting (and worthy) are ethics raised. Finch increasingly realizes the dangers of a world dominated by machines, especially if they develop a mind of their own or fall into unscrupulous hands. Major threat here is the Samaritan Machine, top American officials determined to have complete control over everyone in the land (and beyond) - total surveillance the aim with removal of anybody who deviates from the norm.

All this is most chilling. Can Finch save us all? Here is a David and Goliath situation, unlikely to end as satisfyingly as that one did.

Thank goodness for the occasional humour (this the season where Finch sings) and for episodes like those of old - bad people dealt with, potential victims saved. Elsewhere all becomes very grim, especially in brainwashing sequences.

This is Michael Emerson's show, his quirky Harold Finch the main reason to watch. (I had not realized the actor is married to Carrie Preston, who briefly features - she so hilariously quirky in "The Good Wife" and "The Good Fight".) Finch is one with a face almost expressionless but so much conveyed, he also more active than one might expect - hastily limping here and there to aid colleagues and to do whatever is urgently necessary.

Only in the bonus features is Emerson to smile, even to laugh most heartily. His views are most interesting on the part he plays and the issues raised.

13 episodes. A Comic-Con session, as ever inexplicably on the final disc although mainly about Season 4 and what can be expected in the new one. Sadly, also as ever, for some the music track may prove a problem - fine in action sequences, but a distraction during dialogue especially when so much is said quietly.

Overall? At its best, a great series with very valid points about over-reliance on machines. (Each week news bulletins give examples of problems resulting.) Apparently there is more going on than we are ever told - those on high knowing more about each of us than ever suspected.)

The world needs more Harold Finches to redress the balance.

Man against machine

Really great final chapter to what has been a fantastic watching experience. If you were frustrated with the slow moving and procedural pace of the initial season, believe me, you're missing out. The mythology built for this show. when they have their feet firmly planted in sci-fi is very enjoyable, and thought provoking. This final season is a fitting, often heartbreaking end to a great show, and everyone is on top of their game here.

Excellent series
Verified purchase
This entire series has been superb and the only wish we have regarding Season 5 is that it should be longer. The acting, characters and script provide quality, believable viewing, great action and humour - plus it stays with you longer as there is plenty of food for thought - it has sparked more interesting discussions than anything else we have viewed in recent times.

the action sequences were fun - but it had lost its drive and energy

It started well but, as it moved through 5 series it went into decline. Once it moved into 'big conspiracy' mode it lost the punch of self-contained episodes. However Jim Caviezel did his stuff, the action sequences were fun - but it had lost its drive and energy.

A Brilliant Final Season
Verified purchase
A brilliant final season for a really great show, On the one hand i'm happy that the creators avoided falling into the pitfall of a "happy ever after" finale, though on the other hand I really wanted everyone to survive but i believe that it would have detracted from everything that came before, so they made the right choice ending the show on a high the way it did

This is a super thriller/action show, better if you understand a little about technology such as AI.

The casting is just about perfect and the character -acting superb, especially that of Michael Emerson. I'm amazed at the way the writers are able to twist the storyline time after time so that just when you fell there's a complete resolution, another fly lands in the ointment! Love it - can't get enough!
