Better as a radio play?
The writing and pacing seem good, but the actors are wasted. It is filmed with such low contrast and light levels that the expressions, and indeed most action, are lost in shadow. Might as well have been a radio play.

Perhaps the cinematographer's intention was to build an atmosphere of mystery? Ironically, some of the brightest frames are around the black mysterious pit. But most of the time there is at best a fain glow in the frame while the actors speak and the Foley artist makes noise.

Abut half way through I turned on the subtitle to see if the descriptions would help, it did, somewhat e.g. “[Bison grunts]” while the screen was entirely blank. It would, however, be more helpful if the subtitles included the characters names so the listeners could tell who is speaking, or indeed being murdered.

A lost opportunity with this one, but perhaps it can be fixed in a re-edit? The story does sound good.

May as well have been an audio book
Worst lighting on a tv/film ever! It’s SOOO dark you can’t see anything going on in the program and may as well have been an audio book.

I would avoid if you can.

If you like engaging, surrealist shows or movies then this is for you
Wow, reading some other viewers opinions on this show has been rather grim. Personally, I'm really enjoying it. Once you hit episode 3 things start to take a wonderful turn for the weird - giving you some nice comedic moments, moments of high strangeness, and some lovely surrealist imagery and ideas. Outer Range gave me big The X Files vibes and enormous Twin Peaks (original series) vibes from the very start and I'm into it. It has its own unique story with some great acting, particularly from the brothers of each family, and honestly I've never had an issue with any episodes in regards to its colour grading being too dark or washed out. It looks pretty great. I think it's one of those shows where you really need to just give the first few episodes a go and see how you like it. If you enjoy quirky, strange, surrealist supernatural story telling then this show will keep your interest.

Moody and paced but always building...and divisive it appears.
Well if theres one thing about this, it seems to polarsie the audience like most great work seems to do. It is moody, it is dark (visually) but that only enhances the experience in my view. A great premise, flawless performances all round, really. Brolin is perfect and the casting is spot on.

It's just a great story (even so far) and is balanced well between the different sub-plots. I think that sometimes work like this is abit too much for some people who want more easily digestable content and easy to follow plot with everything spelt out on day one. It's slower, more thoughtful and cinematic. Give it time, I think this promises to be worth sticking with.

Certainly I have never seen anything like it. Much anticipation for the next episodes.

Very slow & extremely tedious
I've no problems at all with the lighting as it's all perfectly clear if you have a decent television & it's properly calibrated. What I do have problems with is that firstly it's so slow that it's hard not to fall asleep. Secondly if you found a huge hole in the middle of a pasture why would you feel the need to keep it secret from everyone including your family? Thirdly why do various characters (none of which are likeable) keep bursting into song? All the more so when they're all such awful singers. I wanted to like this & tried to give it a chance, but after four episodes I'm not prepared to suffer any more of this utter garbage.

No Spoilers: Atmospheric, fleshed out characters, a strange mix of genres that makes it compelling.
Quick verdict: I couldn’t help watching the first two episodes straight off the bat. Really looking forward to more.
Ranch handling, reality bending, stylised thriller with a supernatural, Gods and demons feel to it.
It’s bold enough to script creepy and foreboding scenes right out in the open and under the midday sun, as well as in the darkness and shadows.

First thoughts:
Pros
Old fashioned feel, but with some heavily stylised scenes (e.g. first episode of Peaky Blinders).
Solid dialogue and some very compelling acting.
Moments of levity land well for what is quite a dark themed show.
Made me want to watch more episodes.

Cons
Opening exposition wasn’t necessary and would have been more fun trying to work out what that thing is. Skip forward until you see the opening title. The exposition is retold later in the show so you won’t miss anything.
Telling you something is going to happen in 3 days as soon as the show starts ("3 days earlier"), so am I to wade through filler before something happens on that third day?

Solid opening episode introduces the characters, their motivations and surroundings. The show does well to sprinkle those ominous feelings and apprehension of interacting with something that doesn't quite make sense. A balance between self preservation and curiosity of the unknown.

Details and things to note:
Themes include traditional ways versus the unavoidable faceoff with modernisation.
First episode is around 58 minutes with the second a bit shorter at 43 minutes.
Themes are more towards mature content, with language and violence giving the first 2 episodes a 16+ rating.
Brolin should do westerns for sure.

Final thoughts:
A combination of X-Files, Twilight Zone and perhaps the Outer Limits, mixed with a taut western homestead thriller to really capture that feeling of isolation.
An intriguing mishmash of genres that keeps you wondering where it will go. There’s a few storylines running that intersect but may or may not be tied together. So far not much feels like padding or that scenes are going to waste, but only time will tell.
Very much enjoyed the first episode and I won't comment on the second at this point as it will give away elements of the first.
I’m recommending that you have a look.

Why is it so dark?
I would have enjoyed this a whole lot more if i could have seen half of what was going on!. I have a 4k tv that delivers great pictures but this looks like it was it was filmed down a coal mine. Why so Dark? why spent a fortune making a show that is visually obscured. Turn up the brightness and I'm sure this show will shine

Welcome to "Lost" 2.0
Writers seem to have taken a page relating to absolute inane and lethargic writing from those who wrote Lost, there however they had the benefit of the doubt from the public, here, they should know better.

All of this is exacerbated by the moronic idea that a weekly release would do it any favours.

Not only does the deftness of the screenplay bog down the dramatic arc of the characters, also the editing proves Directors and Producers should never employ interns as their main editors...oh wait!, the editor was not an intern?, ok so you made the conscious choice to give the job to the incumbent...well then maybe the series should have done with a better Director and Producer cause maybe I am wrong but a full three minutus of caddle traveling to a place where nothing happens is interesting, engaging and such.

Guys, if you do not how to maintain storytelling quality, please, stop.

AVOID.
