American Remake of a Korean Horror Film

A tough act to follow, and I'm surprised it got made at all, knowing Hollywood's strict adherence to all things proper, and father/daughter incest is about as taboo as you can get. If this had not been a copy it would easily have got top marks from me. I thought Josh Brolin did a damn fine job of what is a very punishing story to tell. I fully expected this to be watered down rubbish, but it isn't, and it sticks to the story pretty closely. And yes, it is a horror film. There's no other word to describe it.
If you haven't seen the original, then you should. That is a classic.

Not the original but pretty good nonetheless

Lets deal with the elephant in the room first - this is a remake of the film Oldboy (2003) directed by Park Chan-wood. The original is brilliant and is a better film than this version in every way so if you're only going to watch one version and you're not averse to subtitles, watch that instead.

However, having said all that, I was still pleasantly surprised by this version. On its own terms I thought it was a good film. Solidly directed by Spike Lee and boasting a quality cast, all on good form, it's more than worth a watch.

The set up is simple but fantastic - a man is abducted, locked up for 20 years and then released. He has no idea who imprisoned him or why and now we follow him as he seeks answers to these questions. It turns into a rather violent quest, quite graphic in places and the tale takes some good twists and turns. It's likely to keep you guessing up until the disturbing outcome. Good stuff and underrated in my opinion.

Mindbending crap

I couldn't understand the first thing about this weirdo film. I thought it would make sense at the end by showing he was a crazy alcoholic hallucinating, but no, this odd sick film had no answers and the person who made this must have been on crack or something. Avoid wasting any time on this film it will do your head in.

A film you won't forget anytime soon

Certainly not a film for everyone, I know many stated its far inferior to the Korean original but having seen this first I was blown away. The shock factor was off the scale, I was lost for words at the end of the film and it reminded me of how I felt watching seven for the first time but x5. It's a really intriguing plot a man kept captive for 20 years and then trying to work out why he was put there only to find out it's not why he was held captive but WHY was he released. Great film but haunting and certainly one you won't forget.

Oldboy 2013 film

Oldboy is a fantastic film, it's dark, twisted, disturbing and there's alot of action in the film. All the actors are absolutely brilliant. I only watched this film because my favourite actor Elizabeth Olsen is in it and I though the film was well written and very well done, it's differently a good horror and action film. I would recommend to buy the DVD because delivery was on time and the DVD arrived in perfect condition.

A reasonable remake

If you have seen the original you’ll know what to expect.

Josh Brolin plays out anti-hero who is kidnapped and kept in relative comfort for years. Inside he learns how to fight and what little he can gain about the outside world from tv.

Eventually released, he now seeks revenge and answers that will reveal truths he wished he could forget.

I don't know what to say!

If you have seen the Korean original of this film you will know the ending. If you are watching this for the first time I would say it's a story about a mans train wreck of a life that comes crashing down around him in a sudden and very frightening way. After years of humiliation at the hands of unseen tormentors he evolves and sets out to find his tormentor. What happens in between is violent, very violent. The end of this film is the most shocking part of it and it left me with my title I don't know what to say!
